Today's Featured Biography
Ralph Byrns
After graduating from ASU and marrying in 1965, I was drafted, and as a recreation specialist, supervised a day camp for children in Heidelberg, Germany. Then Rice University (MA Economics, 1972, PhD, 1976).
Positions: Ass't Prof Clemson University (1972-1977), Metropolitan State College of Denver (1977-1987), University of Colorado at Boulder (1981-1997), Duke University (2000-2001), and finally, University of North Carolina (2001-2011). Gravitated from economics to philosophy while writing a lot of software and some texts (e.g., Economics, 6 editions, 1981-97) with Gerald W. Stone, Jr. (also West Phoenix HS, 1959).
My ex-wife Patricia Reilly Byrns, M.D. (Cortez High, 1964) retired as Associate Dean of the UNC-Chapel Hill Medical School, in 2011. We divorced 2012. Our daughters both graduated from U of Colorado, and each has two children. Jennifer is an attorney (Notre Dame) in Santa Fe, where her husband Phil (Ph.D., Philosophy) is faculty at St. Johns College. Melissa lives west of Chicago, and works part time as a realtor and part time in her husband's practice (Dr. Shane Swaney).
I'm living east of Carefree AZ, up against the Tonto National Forest, with my wife Leslie, whom I expect to love forever. Her daughter Michelle lives in San Jose and works for NASA, and her son Bret lives on Vashon Island, WA, with his wife Melana, and their two children.
We are stardust, floating in ether, 14 billion years or so from the beginning of this cycle of continuing creation and continuing entropy. We are lucky to live, and love, and through reflection and experience, to learn, and to enjoy our time .. a dot on the infinite stream of nothing ... and being ... and nothingness .. and being.
... :) And life in this blip in time is very, very good.
