Today's Featured Biography
Pamela Kratzer Billings
Tried working fulltime right out of high school only to discover that to have a job that satisfied and challenged me, I'd need a degree. (Or so I though!) Entered Cal State Fullerton in January 1983. Stayed only two semesters, because I joined a traveling drama company and began touring the United States, Canada and Alaska performing in schools, military bases, nursing homes and churches.
Toured, acted and directed for 4 years--met Carl on my third tour, married him after my fourth. First kiss on our first date, which was also the night we got engaged....long story.
Our first home--an apartment on seminary grounds--in St. Paul, Minnesota. Yes, I learned to drive on snow and ice! Also learned to drive stick, on a 16-year-old Toyota Corolla given to us by my father-in-law. Now, that was fun.
Carl studied Greek, homiletics, grief counseling, New Testament theology, etc. while I spied on a nearby church by working as their secretary. I wanted to know what it'd be like to be married to a pastor...
We went to Wenatchee, Washington, for internship 1989-90, after a summer in hell, I mean, Phoenix, Arizona, living with my mother-in-law in 120-degree heat, pregnant. Our firstborn, Victoria Grace, enetered our apartment on March 13th of 1990. And, of course, she is the most marvelous baby in the world--isn't everyone's baby the most marvelous?
We returned to Minnesota (brrrr) for senior year of seminary, then moved to Montana for Carl's first call--his first church. Actually, it was two churches since both the Presbyterian and the Lutheran churches shared a pastor in this little rural town of Jordan, Montana. Must see map. Quite isolated.
When I was pregnant with our second child and we were speeding on the 86-mile highway trip to the nearest hospital, a highway patrol car appeared. We had the hare-brain idea of me grabbing my belly and pretending to be in labor....but speeding is no big deal. At that time, there was no daytime limit on speed, only what was deemed (by the driver) reasonable and safe. Lots of motorists sped through Montana during our 3 1/2 years living there.
We sped away ourselves in 1994, coming out of the cold to start a congregation in Atascadero, California. We're still here, living with two sons now, our daughter, one cat and one dog. Homeowners, car owners, life owners giving thought to where we've been and where we'd like to go from here.
