Jason Kim
I am a Professor of Molecular Medicine and Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes at University of Massachusetts Medical School. I am also a Director of NIH-funded National Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Center at UMass. My research for more than 25 years has focused on type 2 diabetes and obesity, and I have made a significant contribution to the field with 167 peer-reviewed publications, mostly in high-impact scientific journals such as Science, Nature, and Cell Metabolism. My NIH-funded research program investigates the molecular link between inflammation and insulin resistance as underlying mechanisms of obesity driven type 2 diabetes and its complications. After graduating from Beverly Hills High School in 1986, UC Irvine in 1991, and USC Keck School of Medicine in 1996, my academic career began as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Section of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Yale University School of Medicine in 2002. After becoming an Associate Professor of Cellular & Molecular Physiology at Penn State College of Medicine in 2005, I moved to Boston area to become a Full Professor with Tenure at University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2008. I am currently a member of the MD/PhD Admissions Committee at UMass Medical School, and I have almost 20 years of experience working on the medical school admissions committee with previous tenure at Yale and Penn State. I'm an Adjunct Investigator of Joslin Diabetes Center at Harvard Medical School, Adjunct Professor of Seoul National University in South Korea, and an external advisor for Diabetes Research Center at the Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, and University of Hawaii. I'm also a key scientific advisor for several leading pharmaceutical companies. Over the years, I have mentored more than 300 research interns, medical and graduate students, research and clinical fellows, and junior faculty. My goal is to advance our understanding on the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and its complications and to find a cure for diabetes.
