Today's Featured Biography
Jim Frame
After high school I enrolled at Berkeley, but family life took some rough turns and I just didn't have the heart to stay in school. I wandered away from campus one day in the spring of '72 and never went back. Shortly thereafter I landed in Davis where my sister, brother and a bunch of cousins were living. I then spent a few (okay, maybe more than a few) "lost" years trying to figure out what to do with my life. I bounced around among a number of different jobs in the process, and in '77 got a job on a survey crew with a Sacramento surveying and engineering firm. I started out on the bottom rung, and at first it was just a job. But as my head started to clear I found that I liked it. I worked my way up through a few employers, getting licensed as a land surveyor in 1984. In '93 I went out on my own (for all the wrong reasons, but that's another story), and I've been self-employed ever since.
1993 was a watershed year for another reason: I met Kari, my wife-to-be. We married in '96 (first marriage for both of us), and son Peter was born in '98. We were going for 2, but Kari decided that she didn't want to have another kid at 45, so Peter is sans siblings. Peter is now (03/2021) a grad student in Ann Arbor, chasing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (fluid mechanics).
I'm still working because I like what I do. I no longer have any employees, which makes scheduling a lot more flexible than before. And as I get deeper into what's traditionally considered "retirement age" I'm more selective about the kinds of projects I take on, and more casual about taking days off when I feel like it.
My "other jobs" are serving on the boards of directors of a couple of local non-profits.
Kari and I have been on a pretty short leash for the last year due to COVID-19, and we're looking forward to things opening up again. We both have vaccinations on board, so things are looking up.
