Today's Featured Biography
John Farwell
After graduating from San Diego State with a BS in Bus Admin/Acct in 1976, I spent a couple of years in LA working for Rockwell in the B1 Bomber/Space Shuttle division before moving to Portland. Worked for Tektronix in Beaverton for 8 years and met my first wife at a company picnic – just in time for the 10 year reunion of PHS class of 1971. In 1988 a position opened up at a small Tektronix division located in Redmond Or. Having skied at Mt Bachelor on several occasions I jumped at the chance to live in the small town/resort area of Bend. After a couple of years the marriage ended and my wife returned to Portland, leaving me in Bend to take on the role of single parenting with our three daughters. It was a challenging time - and ironically just a year or so before the 20th reunion of the PHS class of 1971. I was fortunate to meet a wonderful woman (Jane) who was willing to take on the responsibility for my girls on top of the two children she was raising from her first marriage.
In 1999 with the “Asian crisis” causing a lot of cost cutting, Tektronix closed the local division and we had the choice to move back to Portland where I could continue working for Tek or we could remain in Bend. It was a unanimous vote. As one door closed, another opened and little did I know that it would lead to an amazing career opportunity with a small privately held local company, then called “Bend Cable”, that had just become the first to launch high speed Internet service in Oregon. I was employee #55 in a finance & accounting role. The company grew and expanded and in my 18 year career there I had the good fortune to be involved in leading sales, marketing, customer care and financial operations as well as doing some project management. We sold the company in 2014 and I retired in 2017 after working for the buyer for 3 years. Outside of work I’ve enjoyed the bounty of activities that are available here in Central Oregon; skiing, hiking, rafting and mountain biking, kayaking and more. I’ve also had a lot of fun with music (guitar and singing), something I had done in my early teen years with an 8th grade graduation band at St Leo’s school in Oakland, but then put away. I’ve “hacked” my way through a few garage bands over the years but now it's just me. Jane and I now split our time between Bend and a condo in Tucson, a combination that allows for year around outdoor activities. Retirement is GREAT! Seven grandchildren are located in Minnesota and South Carolina.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
