Today's Featured Biography

Rory Cantando

After graduating from PHHS, I went to Santa Clara University on a 4 year ROTC scholarship and got my bachelors degree in Spanish Literature in 1972. I also got my commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army. My plan was to finish my military obligation, and then go on to graduate school to pursue a teaching career. I changed my career aspirations after completing my 4 years in the Army.
From July, 1972 when I entered the service, I began my officer basic training at Ft Ben Harrison, IN, and then was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division in Aschaffenburg, W. Germany where I was stationed for 3 years. My work was basically Executive Officer for a small company of administrative clerks. The work was fairly routine, and I always had my week-ends free, so I was able to travel through out Europe. I was fortunate in that I did not have to serve in Vietnam...the war was really winding down by the time I entered the Army.
After completing my 4 years in the Army (last assignment at Ft Lewis, WA) I moved to Fresno, CA with a job that I had lined up with the Weyerhauser Corp. After working for Weyerhauser for about 4 months, I was totally bored, and changed careers. I was hired by John Andrews, the local manager of Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Smith to begin training as a stock broker. Although I have since changed employers ( I now work for Wachovia Securities which will be Wells Fargo soon), my basic work as a stock broker is the same...but our official business title is Financial Advisor. I enjoy the work still after 32 years, but I do not ever want to go through another one of these financial crises.
It will probably take 3 or 4 years to recoup what I have lost in the last 3 or 4 months.
I had planned on retiring in about 5 to 8 years. It really depends on the markets, and how much it will cost to get my son and daughter thru college. I certainly do not want to be working for the rest of my life.
