Bob Duval

I enrolled at VHS midway through my sophomore year. I came to Vista from Hawaii. I enjoyed my two plus years at VHS in pursuit of being the first Rhodes Scholar in our family. Had it not been for the math, science, English and girls I'm sure I had a decent chance. Unfortunately, by the time I moved my tassel from the right side of my cap to the left we were moving once again. I do have so many great memories of my time at VHS but will not embarrass anyone by naming names.
We left Vista for Orange County where I enrolled in the local JC. Attended for a couple of years but decided, based on a draft number, to enlist in the Navy (to get out of going to Vietnam). After my initial training and schooling the Duval luck came into play and I got my first assignment....in country Vietnam. Ran rivers, set ambushes in the jungles of Rung Sat Special Zone and prayed a lot. Served on three great ships. Recruited out of Salt Lake City, UT and finished my 20 year 19 day career as a Communications Instructor in San Diego.
After the Navy I went to work in accounting for the Department of Justice, Laguna Niguel, CA. A year of accounting for the San Juan Capistrano Unified School District and that was it. Did a couple of years of tax preparation before really "retiring".
Best thing to happen to me...after my time in Vietnam I kind of locked myself in my room for awhile. My brother, Charlie, VHS Class of 68 (had we not moved) decided to set me up with a blind date. That date changed my life and hers. Helen has been my wife for 45 years! Some blind date huh. Hope she never gains her sight. She endured the life of a Navy wife and stuck with me through it all. She gave me two handsome sons Anthony and Robert (not junior). We have an even more handsome grandson Anthony Jr. And we have another grandchild pending early 2017.
Didn't take too much space to write about the last 50 years but there's more than these few paragraphs could hold. Sadly we spend so much time growing up we don't take the time to "look back" at how we got where we are today. This reunion, though I did not attend, afforded me the opportunity to reflect back and remember the days that made me who I am today. I miss it.
