John Marsilio Marshall
John Marshall (aka Marsilio)
In Los Angeles, where most folks wear their resumes on their shirt sleeves, it’s sometimes a bit difficult to answer the question, “What are you doing now?” But John Marshall usually likes to give a quick answer, “Oh . . . I’m a pilot!” Then he watches their face to see their surprise.
John spends his days exploring the sky, flying low and slow in his old Taylorcraft L-2A. Yes, old . . . it was manufactured for service in World War II the same year he was born. John finally got around to living his boyhood dream, flying an old airplane, after a successful career spanning more than three decades in radio and television news.
For twenty years, he managed a news website, eNewswires.com, an Internet portal for updated news. In 1995, he was the host of “Encounters,” a magazine program running a season on the Fox Television Network. Before that, he was a news reporter and anchor for KNBC. During his 20 years at Channel 4 in Los Angeles, he won the Emmy, two Golden Mikes and the prestigious Sigma Delta Chi award for Southern California Journalist of the Year. During the late 60's, John also covered the news for TV stations KTLA and KTTV as well as KFWB Radio. He began his career as a high school senior working full time on the local radio station, KBOL in Boulder, Colorado.
John, at 80, is still married to his high school sweetheart, actress Joan Van Ark. Their proudest accomplishment is their daughter, Vanessa, who attended Princeton, holds a masters degree in theater and is now a successful actress herself.
