Mozella Strachan Tyler
Born in Miami, Florida on September 1, 1960, I was born the third child to the parents of John and Mary Strachan.
My earlier years of my life were spent growing up in the Over Town area of Miami, Florida. Some years later, my family and I were relocated to Hallandale, Florida (The birth place of my mom), in Broward County, Florida. Our relocation was due to the construction of I-95 through our area, and the government's policy of Eminent Domain.
A few years later, my parents divorced and I was sent to live on the family's home Island of Merritt Island, Florida, in Coca Beach. I remained there for two years, until I was relocated again to Miami Florida.
While growing up in Miami, Florida, I had the esteemed pleasure of meeting some of my classmates at North County Elementary School in Carol City, Florida. Later, we matriculated to Carol City Jr. High School, then to Carol City Sr. High School, and finally graduating from American Sr. High School in 1978.
The years spent while being educated in the Dade County Public School system were memorable. I believe that my classmates and friendships were of a unique value, because of the comradeship and bond we often shared. There have been times when I have reflected on past relationships with my friends. I have often wished I could revisit my life all over again, just to relive the fun I had. I have truly been blessed to have such great friends.
Growing up as the only girl in a family of all boys, my parent's expectations for my life were very high. Mainly, one of the expectations for my future required that I become the best individual that I could be through education. As a result, I have aspired to achieve these expectations by earning my Bachelor's Degree in Education and later earning my Master's of Science in English Education.Presently, I am working on completing my PHD studies on line, after which, I plan to open up my own school.
After High School I tried college at Howard University in Washington D.C., and later transferred to Morgan State in Baltimore, Maryland. Neither fulfilled my desire to do what I truly wanted to do. That desire was to become married and raise a family. Therefore, I dropped out of college and went on to marry the man of my dreams and raise two daughters.
Realizing that I had a charge to keep from my parents, I reentered back into college and changed my major to Education. I was able to graduate and begin my career as an educator. I began my career as an elementary teacher and presently I am employed as a middle school teacher of Reading and Language Arts. I have a passion for education, and everyday, I attempt to impart the burning desire I have with my students. For they are (my students) my most precious commodity in life.
In recent years, I have made many transitions. First in foremost is the loss of my beloved husband Louis. Later the loss of my mother and grand son Michael Jr. The loss of the three people I loved most in life made me realize how precious time is. Therefore, I plan to live each day as if it were my last. Even though a lot of my loved ones are gone, I continue to speak of them in the present, because in my heart, they will always live.
These days, I spend my time enjoying the relationship I have with my children and grandchildren. Family to me is the most important to me,because they define who I am. My oldest daughter and I have a special bond. While she has been married for a number of years, her husband, and children make life for me rewarding. My youngest daughter Gelesa is now a sophomore in college at Bethune- Cookman University in Daytona Beach,Florida.
Lastly,I have found a peace in my life which only comes from the understanding that God has given me. God has made me realize that without the love of my family and my savior Jesus Christ, living my life would be in vain.
To sum it all up, I make the most of my time by praising and worshiping God at New Birth Baptist Church Cathedral of Faith International, in Miami, Florida, where Bishop Victor T. Curry is both my Pastor and Cousin. Being a member of New Birth is exhilarating and inspiring.
To conclude, as Langston Hughes once wrote, "Life for me aint been no crystal stair, sometimes it had nails in it." Yet, thanks to the Glory of God, I've managed to make it through.
