John Strickland

Summary:
Most of my life has been spend studying and/or teaching and now it is spent studying and/or writing and taking photographs. My political views are those of a Plutarchan conservative, as in Plutarch's "Moralia." (Since Plutarch lived more than a thousand years ago, I believe I am more conservative than anyone in contemporary North America. It probably began when I studied with Harvey Mansfield at Harvard in the 60's. He is called "The Prince of Conservatives." He was and is my favorite teacher after leaving Groves High School. His books are on my shelf next to those of Plutarch and Raymond Aron.)
Three years ago I attended the 90th birthday celebration for Mrs. Sylvia Feuerstein in New York City. Her son said recently, March 2010, that his mother was still hanging in at age 93. She said she has mixed feelings about such a long life. If I live that long I hope I am as full of common sense as she is. I used to say to friends that I would just call it quits at 137. At 67, that age seems a lot closer, though out of reach. I am happy with the ancient Greek saying that "the proper measure of a person's life is not the length but how well it was lived." I have no wisdom of that order to hand out. I'm just grateful for each moment. Right now I am quite happy to see spring coming in our garden. I hope to make it to the reunion but, in the meantime, I'll try to add some stories from those years--while my memory is somewhat intact. Of course I remember you all as you were before 1961 so you haven't aged a bit. Absolutely amazing!!!
