Today's Featured Biography

Rose Marie Hintzen

AFTER SENIOR HIGH
I started nurses training in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. My parents didn’t have the means to pay for a 3 year program of nursing. So I accepted a practical nursing program at St. Luke’s Methodist Hospital. Throughout my life I have been happy with my choice of vocation. It was rewarding to work with people. I worked from premature babies to elder citizens during a 41 year working career. The last 5 years in nursing I was shop steward for my district.

The only disadvantage I would say was wages, but wages are only a part of a persons life. Who ever said that having a lot of money makes you happy. Money does help in some situations. My work gave me the means to support my daughter and hold a “standard” throughout my life that was comfortable.

TRIP TO EUROPE

After nurses training I worked in Cedar Rapids for a couple years, then took a trip to Europe with a classmate from St. Luke’s. We travel around for 3 months and keep a budget close to 5 dollars per day. We followed the instructions in a book that was popular at that time. The man that wrote the book showed us that you could travel cheaply. Most Americans who travel-led at that time had money. We were the start of a new breed. We were laughed at when we came to the travel agency and told them how much money we planned to use. Inter-rail was born that year and the travel agency was impressed when we came back with a report of good experiences. We also traveled alone which wasn’t common at that time. Because of this we managed to became members of many little hotel families. We stayed at pension hotels which gave meals along with room. My diary was filled with many memories. At this time I visited my mother’s family in Denmark.

Working in Dubuque
I worked in Cedar Rapids until I was called back to Dubuque. My father had a heart attack, quite severe, touch and go. I was 10 years of age when my mother became blind. So being called back to Dubuque wasn’t a surprise. I started working at Finley Hospital (obstetrical and delivery room). I left again for Cedar Rapids, mostly because I could get better wages elsewhere. Six years later (in the same year) both my father and mother died. At that time I was working in the University of Iowa Hospitals. One year later my grandfather wanted to visit his brothers and sisters in Denmark, he asked me to come along. That I did and it changed my life. I never came back to the USA except for a few visits.
LIFE IN EUROPE
is a different life style. Apartments and houses (for example) can be large, but in general most people live on smaller incomes and lifestyle. In many countries there are programs that cover you from birth to grave. Like admission to the hospital and free visits to the doctor. There are other examples, but you can ask about them.
IN 1971 - 1978
I changed my name from Hintzen to Sniegocki. My husband was born in Poland and came to Denmark in 1960. His occupation was physicist and mathematician. When I met him he was a teacher. He is retired and works part time as a historian for the National Archives in the southern part of Denmark. Inthis marriage we had one daughter. My daughter and I continue visit him. My DAUGHTER was born in 1973. She is a social worker. She works in a program for alcoholic abusers.
DESCRIPTION OF DAILY LIFE AT HOME
I must admit that my home at times looked a mess, due to my daughter and her friends. But that way I knew where she was, Also when she was a teenager.

GARDEN HOUSE.
It is part of the Danish culture. It is a garden area with a house. You are only allowed to live in the house during the summer. It is mainly for people that live in apartments in the city. The property in the picture was filled with fruit trees, bushes and flowers. It is a good place to relax if you like gardening and fresh fruits and vegetables.
We did a lot camping and hiking. Most on week-ends with several groups f.ex. (ornithology and Youth Hostel Assoc.). I take my grandchild camping with a backpack.
We had guests from People to People and 3 separate exchange students from the USA.
RELATIONSHIP 1995 - 2201
Decided after my daughter moved from home to find a man to share my later years. He was a widower with 3 grown children. We separated in November of last year. It was a hard decision but necessary. It was not a friendly break-up. His daughter, grandchild, and her husband visit me often. So I really have two daughters instead of one.
Retirement
It has been a joy. I retired on my birthday in 1999. I do volunteer work. I started doing volunteer work before I left the working force. I help in a center for abused women. After I retired I became more active in this service. I am in a group that applies for funds to keep the center open. Keep membership list up to date (150 volunteer’s). I help with the homeless. The Lutheran church in Denmark has a group that works with people who have fallen outside of the birth to grave system. We have charity shops, which sell old clothing and etc.. Most shops support one or other cause. The shops are quite popular. The proceeds of our shop keep a shelter and a kitchen open for the homeless. The work is not glamorous but when you come home you feel you have helped somewhere. The best joy last year was seeing a very poor family come and buy Christmas presents for each other.

THE SCHOOL SYSTEM
in Denmark is somewhat the same as in the USA. They start from kindergarten, 1 class to 10th class. High school is 3 years and 2 years There is no junior high. The classes up to high school are called middle schools same as in England. The explanation: if you attend a 3 year program, it is the same as USA including extracurricular activities. If you attend the 2 year program it is the same but without extracurricular activities. The 2 year program is mainly used by a person that has worked a couple years after finishing the 10th grade. Many student are really tired of school when they get to the 10th grade, so trying something else is a good solution if they continue their education.

AUPAIR GIRL IN AUSTRIA
Hi Mom
I am sitting and thinking about you, and I decided to write a letter. We only talk for a few minutes in the telephone, so you don’t really know how the everyday is here.
Yesterday it is 8 weeks since I came here, and I think that things are really going well. The days are quite quiet. In the morning I get up between 8-8:30 AM, take a shower, afterwards I go shopping for the housekeeper, and then I have free until 11:30 AM. At this time I take a walk with the little one. She must come out every day. Only if it rains a lot are we allowed to be inside. When we go on our walks I usually take her with other Au Pairs girls (mostly from England).
I haven’t gained any weigh as of yet, but it should come *. The housekeeper makes really good meals. I eat and eat, and the worst part is the cakes she makes. I have found a fitness-center to help if I need it.
The evening are usually spent with friends that I have found here. We are usually from 2-5 together. It is irritating that we only have a room at our families. It cost a lot to sit in a café (100-150s. – wages 750s. per. Week). So the money disappears like smoke.
I have talked with my family about Christmas. I said that I would not leave Austria. The Au Pair agency has found a apartment for the holidays, and most of us have said we will stay. We will be a international group, so don’t worry I won’t be bored. I hope you will not miss me too much. Remember the elderly need cheering up during the holidays
Well I can’t think of more to write, and by writing this letter you can see I still can write.
1000 hugs and kisses!
Love Anette

To Close......
By what standards do we measure a culture?
It is customary to evaluate a nation by the magnitude
of its scientific contributions or the quality
of its artistic achievements. However, the true
standard by which we gauge a culture is the extent
to which reverence, compassion, justice are to
be found in the daily lives of the whole people,
not in the acts of isolated individuals. Culture is
a style of living compatible with the grandeur
of being human.

I would like to thank you for reading about my 45 yrs. since high school. I hope you have enjoyed it. I hope also to receive a comment from you. Sincerely,
Rose Hintzen
