Today's Featured Biography
Ellen ANDERSON ATKINS
After our graduation from Elmhurst, I went to Indiana University in Bloomington, IN--Majoring in Business and Minoring in Music and Education.
I sang in the Belles of Indiana at IU and my sister Julia and I went to Germany
with 13 singers and 7 instrumentalists with the Belles in the Fall of 1959 for
6 weeks to sing for USO.
My first position was in Ann Arbor Michigan where I worked for Parke David
Pharmaceuticals and next taught 9th Grade Business in a junior high school.
I met my husband John Sweeney who worked for the University of Michigan. We had two children Brian, who now lives in LaJolla CA and has three children and Beth, who lives outside of St. Paul, MN and has four
children. In 1968, my husband got a position in Columbia MO (half way
between Kansas City and St Louis) with the University of Missouri.
In 1980 I married Charlie Atkins who owned Roths' Department Store in Columbia.
He had three children, one of whom never married but adopted 7 children. His
2 sons each had two children. So I have 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren with another GG on the way. Charlie (and I) loved to trout fish so we went many times to Montana and did lots of other traveling. In 2008 we began spending 6 months in Sun City AZ until he passed in 2013.
I received a Masters Degree in Accounting in 1979, passed the CPA exam and
taught at the University and three different colleges, tenured in the last one. In
Washington DC I received a National Award for Advising students.
After Charlie died, my life changed drastically. Now a widow, I do lots of volunteering, belong to 3 book clubs and am able to attend women's clubs of faculty from the University. My large family and friends mean a lot to me and I spend time
visiting family from coast to coast.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
