Derek Carr

In 1999 I graduated from Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin with a BS in Outdoor Education. So basically I went to school and chose the most fun possible major, where I learned how to teach kids to rock climb and canoe. There's more to it than that, really, but we need not go there. I miss da North Country, dere, eh, and sure wouldn't mind moving back up'dere don'cha know.

After I graduated from college I did a stint hitchhiking and riding freights in the western U.S. and trying the homeless gig in several western cities in an effort to learn better what it is all about. I learned that life is about simple things that most of us overlook. We overlook them so much that when we see a homeless person we don't see them. When someone isn't as distracted as we are... that person must be crazy, right?

I'm presently working as a federal contractor on a wildland fire fuels reduction project out of the Folsom Field Office, BLM. Its a con, really. I don't have any background in fuels but the guy asked me if I could do the job and I said, "Yes". He didn't check and so I'm making pretty decent money for a few months before I go back on the road.

The past three years I have been a whitewater river patrol ranger for the same office. That I do know how to do--I took a job in Moab, Utah, a few years ago, as a river guide and learned how to row big rafts on the Colorado. So now I row big rafts on California rivers to promote public safety.

Two years prior to that I did seasonal wilderness trails construction and maintenance for the US Forest Service in Wyoming and Utah. I'm looking to get out of full-time fire work and back into wilderness. I love waking up in the morning and hearing rushing water and going to sleep at night after watching the alpenglow fade or another performance of the Rising of the Moon.

I just got back from twenty-one days in the Grand Canyon, where I was a boatman on the Colorado River for a friend's permit. We had a great trip--still not sure how the pictures came out.

Life is great. I'm spending my spare time birding and kayaking, mountaineering and helping organize the local peace movement. If nobody offers me a really great summer job, look out world! Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose!

Take a moment and read a book by Daniel Quinn.
Let me suggest My Ishmael.
