Today's Featured Biography
Jeffrey Schifman
Jeffrey Schifman was born and raised in Kansas, and graduated from the Portfolio Center: School of Art & Design, in Atlanta. He has been working in the New York City, commercial photography world, for ten years. Currently he is the in-house staff photographer for the advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather, where he has been for a little over five years. His work has been shown in numerous publications including Communication Arts Magazine.
The Toy Camera Series was inspired in contrast to the rigid and controlled shooting environments of advertising. In the studio, the picture is methodically designed, lighting, focus, and subject are monitored and tweaked to perfection. The cameras are multi-thousand dollar precision instruments, and the development is more often than not, "process normal." Shooting with the fifteen dollar, plastic Holga camera is a world apart. It is a world of frosted edges through a soft-focus plastic lens. To avoid unwanted light leeks, each camera requires a quarter role of black tape around the seams before shooting, and still Jeffrey shoots each image with two cameras to be safe. Here, shooting becomes a challenge, and any sense of control behind the camera is tentative.
But the control that is lost in the shooting is made up for in the dark room. The real process is now in the printing, where his perfectionists ten-hour stint in the dark, can yield three prints on a good day. The results are obvious. Jeffrey's eye both behind the lens and in the processing renders more than just an image, he evokes the mood and feel of a place. His shots are rich and textured, almost dreamy, each conveying a subtle truth of a moment and touching upon the history of the subject. As a whole, the series conveys a slightly skewed vantage on the world, capturing the layered subtext beneath the banal surface, suggesting an innate beauty that has become hard to see with the naked eye.
