Today's Featured Biography
Alice Shaffer Shepherd
After graduating from Fair Park, I spent some years at various clerical jobs (Shreveport Times-Journal, Confederate Memorial Hospital, Louisiana Tech Business Office) before marrying Aubrey Shepherd (also class of '58). We moved to Fayetteville, AR in 1969 after our daughter was born so that Aubrey could pursue a Ph.D. I finally managed to piece together a B.A. in English and later obtained a Master's from then-Northeast Louisiana University.
For the next 18 years after that, I taught English at Springdale High School. In 1985 I was selected as a Fulbright Exchange Teacher and spent a year in an English school outside of London. It whetted my appetite for living in the UK, so after the obligatory year back at Springdale, I applied for and was accepted to teach English at the American Community School, about 30 miles southwest of London. I spent the next 20 years at ACS, first as an English teacher in the IB program and then as the high school librarian and Head of Libraries.
Now, after all that time teaching abroad and taking advantage of the travel opportunities to see Europe, I have returned to live in Fayetteville, Arkansas, in semi-retirement. This spring I began a part-time teaching position with Spring International, a department of the University of Arkansas, which provides language skills classes for international students who are joining the university.
After living away from the States for 20 years, I am slowly re-adjusting to life in America. It is great to be near my daughter, Deirdre, who also lives in Fayetteville, and to renew my friendships with former colleagues from the "old days" at Springdale. Ironically, my Fulbright Teacher Exchange partner from England now also lives in Fayetteville, having met someone here while she was on the exchange year. They stayed in touch and were married some years later, though she continued to live in England until last year and he remained at the Univ. of Arkansas.
I hope to be able to attend the 2008 reunion of the class of '58 (Can it really be 50 years? Surely not!). It will be good to see all the former classmates that I missed seeing in 1998.
Occasionally I make the trip from Fayetteville to Shreveport to visit with the relatives who still live in that area. It's great to see the way the city is growing, but it's difficult to remember it as it was back then, with only two high schools in the whole town. Remember those great Thanksgiving-Day games and the "friendly" rivalry with Byrd?

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
