Today's Featured Biography
Norah Dooley
30+ years?
After BHS I went to Boston University for a year, lived at home. Hated it all. Worked a lot saved money and went to Italy on my own -- what a trip! another long story...
Took a year off, worked and saved money and went to art school to become a painter/ ,phtographer. I wanted to make movies actually. Huh! Graduated for the Museum School and Tufts University with a degree in painting in 1976. Worked for 10 years at an alternative private art school and studio. Had lots of fun but little $ success as an artist. But I sure loved organizing and promoting shows and concerts for the art school's gallery. Showed work in London and Japan. Traveled a lot on no $. Worked with good people and was happy but poor.
Met my husband at one of the many menial jobs I had to support my art habit.
I was a cab driver, breakfast cook at Mickey D's, waitress, Xerox operator,
dishwasher, pot whomper--- you get the idea. While working at a burglar alarm
company as their midnight to 8am monitor-- I listened to 100s of alarms all night--
I met Robert who was the installation manager/electrician. He was divorced,
no kids and 5 years older than I. 2 years after meeting we started going out
and have been together ever since. 27 years this coming April.
Robert and I married in 1981 and have 4 children, all girls, ages 19 - 9.Also a dog, cat, four roosters and a variable number of chickens and 3 horses
[it is a long story -- we are not rich enough to own 3 good horses. We do own lots of land with 2 other people, so we have 3 rescue horses] and a pony. We built our passive solar house out here in the "back of the beyond" in Central Massachusetts. Finished it 3 years ago -- but nothing is really ever finished. Built a barn 2 years ago, had a barn raising with friends. Very fun. We moved into it last
year. Lived in 4 rooms in Cambridge [4 daughters + one small bathroom = lots of fights and in the country for two years ---commuting-- living hell.
6 years ago Robert almost died after a missed heart attack. Had emergency triple by pass and is now, knock wood, okay.
I write children's books and do storytelling for a living.
Love to connect with folks from BHS.
Ciao,
Norah
The Esquimos Have No Word for "War"
-Mary Oliver
Trying to explain it to them
Leaves one feeling ridiculous and obscene
Their houses, like white bowls,
Sit on a prairie of ancient snowfalls,
Caught beyond thaw or the swift changes
Of night and day
They listen politely, and stride away
With spears and sleds and barking dogs
To hunt for food. The women wait
Chewing on skins or singing songs,
Knowing that they have hours to spend,
That the luck of the hunter is often late.
Later, by fires and boiling bones
In steaming kettles, they welcome me,
Far kin, pale brother,
To share what they have in a hungry time
In a difficult land. While I talk on
Of the southern kingdoms, cannon, armies,
Shifting alliances, airplanes, power,
They chew their bones, and smile at one another.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
