Today's Featured Biography
Karin Doster Lemmon
Sorry to have missed the picnic. We couldn't manage two trips East this fall and our nephew, Curt, is marrying his beautiful fiancee, Kara, Oct. 9 in Atlanta. Curt is the stepson of my brother Doug (HHS class of '64).
After HHS I attended Purdue University for two years and received early acceptance to veterinary school at the University of Georgia. I met my husband, Richard, a classmate, although we didn't marry until a year after graduation (UGA class of '72). My first job was with a practice in Manassas, Virginia. It was difficult landing a job as a female veterinarian way back then. There were only 5 women in my class and we all had a difficult time finding positions.
After marrying Richard, we signed on with the government to do meat and poultry inspection. We socked away $$ and after 3 years on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, I resigned and Richard was transferred to New Hampshire, so we moved north, bought our first home and I worked at a practice in Concord, New Hampshire for three years. We bought land, built our first animal hospital, and met overhead our first month. Richard was still with the Meat and Poultry Inspection Service, but soon resigned to take over management of the practice. After a few years, we bought land about 13 miles south and built a second animal hospital. We had a great staff of technicians and associate veterinarians over the years. After 25 years we sold both hospitals to our associates, bought an RV and traveled the western U.S. looking for a place to retire. We eventually decided on Las Vegas and here we are nearly fifteen years later.
We have only feline and avian pets - no human children. The latest are two gambel quail that were abandoned and I raised from the age of one day old. In the past I have been able to release baby quail when they were large enough to survive on their own, but these two refuse to leave. They make great pets! We live adjacent to a large swath of undisturbed desert, so our property is a wildlife haven for quail, doves, cactus wrens, roadrunners, cottontail rabbits, jack rabbits, coyotes, and an occasional bobcat. I never had time to garden when we had the practices, so my time is taken with my desert garden, volunteer work for the humane society, occasional stained glass projects, pilates and yoga. I've had back surgery, knee surgery and see a chiropractor regularly in a failing attempt to ward off the aging process. I hope to see you all at our 50th reunion (say it isn't so!!).

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
