David Brown
Officer Training Corps scholarship. After graduation in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a commission as an Ensign, I completed the Navy’s nuclear power training program, submarine school, and Polaris navigation officer’s course. In 1984, I earned a Master of Science degree in Technical Management from the Johns Hopkins University.
Career: As an active duty nuclear submarine officer on sea duty from 1967 to 1975, I served on two missile submarines and one attack submarine through shipyard periods, shakedown operations, and forward deployments with duties including main propulsion, electrical and reactor control, communications, sonar, electronic warfare, and navigation. After leaving active duty, I served in the Navy Reserve from 1975 to 1995. I commanded a large submarine tender unit; was executive officer, submarine warfare director, and training officer of the submarine resource sponsor unit in the Pentagon; and served as operations director for the Navy Command Center unit. I stood exercise watches in various submarine command centers and in the CNO's Crisis Action Center. During my final 3 years in uniform, I stood over 60 watches as Navy Department Duty Captain.
For the first 35 years of my civilian career, I was a systems test and evaluation engineer at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, gaining and applying broad experience in operation, testing, training, and evaluation of a variety of Navy weapon systems From 1981 through 1995, I supervised a large navigation systems evaluation group, leading the analysis and evaluation of submarine navigation problems. In 2002, I was selected as the subject matter expert for curriculum development for the Navigation Supervisors course and then provided training for the first Navy instructors for the course. In 2007, the Navy Strategic Systems Programs asked for me to fill in as Navigation Branch Engineer. In April 2011, I retired from JHU/APL to accept appointment to this same position as a civil servant.
Travel: Submarine duty is not the way to “join the Navy and see the world” and while my sons were growing up we did mostly road trips to see family or the Grateful Dead. Son Mark and I went to Peru to hike part of the Inca Trail and see Machu Picchu. Once Anne and I were able to, we became World travelers. We’ve been to Aegean Sea islands, Alaska, Antarctica, Argentina, Australia, all the Baltic Sea states, Brazil, Caribbean cruises, China, Egypt, England (twice), France, Germany, Greece, Hawaii, Ireland, Italy (twice), Kenya, Scotland (twice), the Seychelles, South Africa, Tibet, Turkey, New Zealand. I also visited Iceland on the way home from a business trip in the UK. Our latest adventure was an Amazon River cruise and a stay at the Ariau Amazon Towers hotel.
