Robert Rast
Bob Rast is Principal at Tsar Digital. He is a technical business development consultant. In 2008-09, he was Mobile DTV Project Leader at LG Electronics. In 2005-06, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of ATSC, the Advanced Television Systems Committee, the industry organization which authors broadcast television standards.
During the 1990’s, at General Instrument, Bob was a key player in the development of digital HDTV. Following GI’s historic proposal for digital HDTV in 1990, Rast led the effort to include GI’s pioneering technology in the U.S. broadcast standard. When the Digital HDTV Grand Alliance was formed in 1993, Bob became one of its leaders. The ATSC U.S. broadcast DTV standard is based on the Grand Alliance system. In 1997, he accepted, for General Instrument, an engineering Emmy awarded to Grand Alliance members. He was named to Broadcasting and Cable Magazine’s DTV Honor Roll and is a charter member of CEA’s Academy of Digital Television Pioneers. In 2007, he received the National Association of Broadcasters Award of Honor. The saga of digital HDTV was documented in Defining Vision, a book by Pulitzer Prize-winning NY Times reporter Joel Brinkley.
In 1998, Bob joined Dolby Laboratories, where he was Vice President, Business Development. At Dolby he organized Dolby’s efforts in digital cinema. Bob was vice chairman of the SMPTE DC28 Technology Committee on Digital Cinema, and chairman of the Digital Cinema Advisory Group.
During the 1980’s, Rast was an executive with the cable TV industry. Bob’s career started at RCA, in R&D and engineering management, at Sarnoff Labs and RCA Consumer Electronics. He was a co-recipient, in 1980, of the RCA David Sarnoff Team Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement.
