Today's Featured Biography
Roland Kays
Closing on 20 years since I've seen most of you, how to summarize that in one textbox? I went to college at Cornell, and my parents moved out of WB the next year; I think I was only back once since, to catch a beer with Denny on my way through town. I keep in touch with Bryan Hix and occasionally Keith Jacobson and Susan Katz, but not really anyone else. This website is a kick, to see what people are up to. I better get another beer and read on...
Cornell was great, wrestled there and majored in Bio. I met my wife Judy at Cornell. We did the long-distance thing for a few years afterwards while I was doing a phd at Univ Tennessee and she a masters at Wisconsin. Then got hitched in 1995 between research trips to Panama. Had a fun year in Chicago as a post doc at the Field Museum where I got to catch up with Hix, Jake, and my sister. Then moved to my present job as the Curator of Mammals at the New York State Museum in 2000.
The curator job is great, I do a lot of field biology studying wild animals and also get to build exhibits. I do local projects on fishers, coyotes and mice. I also travel a lot and have tracked lions in Kenya, sloths and agoutis in Panama, and olingos in Ecuador. On the personal side Judy and I have 2 young boys which are a blast (plus a lot of work, life changing, all that stuff). We like living in Albany. We enjoy the seasons and the mountains nearby. After college I traded wrestling for Ultimate Frisbee and still enjoy playing in local leagues and clubs. Two years ago I picked up unicycling, and recently its started getting a bit extreme. Off-road uni rides are my favorite, and I'm heading to a 24hr mountain bike race next week (with a team of Uni's). I also do some longer distance riding, and will be in a 500mile unicycle race later this summer.
ok, that's more than you wanted to know. I hope I can make it to reunion to see what everyone else has been up to.
