Today's Featured Biography
Steve Ortmann
I grew up in Winona, Minnesota, along the mighty Mississippi River. My first job was a paper route, and each week I saved and invested half of what I earned. Water skiing, hunting, and helping my grandpa train dogs filled much of my childhood.
My father founded WinCraft with four other investors, while my mother stayed home to raise my sister and me. I attended St. Olaf College, where I met a cute redhead named Penny Cassady. We graduated in 1971. I then moved to Chicago and worked for Minnesota Fabrics for two years before returning to Minneapolis.
Penny and I married in 1974. Soon afterward, we packed up everything we owned and set off on a three-month tour of Europe.
When we returned home, I went to work for a fabric company and was soon transferred to Kansas City. Eighteen years later, the company consolidated, and I had to decide what came next. We bought an HVAC business and quickly learned the meaning of sheer terror. I could not eat or sleep, and I lost 30 pounds.
Then summer arrived. Penny remained my constant cheerleader, business took off, and we never looked back. I also gained back the 30 pounds-and perhaps a few more.
For our 25th wedding anniversary, we visited Grand Marais, Minnesota, in January. It was 20 degrees below zero, and Penny bought a house. She turned to me and asked, "Are you coming?"
We sold everything in Kansas City and moved to our new home on Devil Track Lake. It was perfect for us.
After 25 wonderful years there, we decided it was time to move closer to family. Our daughter Julie lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and is completing her PhD in education. Our son Corby is an artist in St. Paul. Our daughter Betsy lives in St. Anthony and is a part owner of ESI, a coffee wholesaler. All three are married, and we have five grandchildren.
After touring several apartments, we made an appointment to visit Applewood Pointe the next day. Our guide gave us a delightful tour. Halfway through, we already knew: this was the place.
The welcoming community, beautiful grounds, interior and exterior maintenance, garage, and many other features convinced us to make an offer.
And here we are, happily settled in Apartment 121.
