Today's Featured Biography
Gil Potter
Hard to believe I've been in Texas for 25 years. After graduating from KU with a degree in Aerospace Engineering (I took the 4 1/2 year plan, hope my kids do better than that!) I moved to Texas to work for General Dynamics, which was later bought by Lockheed that then merged with Martin Marietta to become Lockheed Martin. I'm the engineering manager of the Materials and Structural Test Labs, and although I'd like to say it has been a great career, it really has just been a good job. The defense industry always has ups and downs, and thankfully we’ve had way more good years than bad. I have had a few opportunities to travel with work. I spent 10 days in South Korea and had the opportunity to visit England twice. My wife got to accompany me on the last trip so it was quite a holiday!
We live in a suburb of Fort Worth called Benbrook, which we moved to after our first child was born. It was a sleepy little town that has been lately growing leaps and bounds. Our house sits up on a hill and to the north we can see cows in a pasture, so it doesn't feel too much like the city. However, there are new subdivisions going in all the time so Benbrook is losing that small town appeal. The area has been a good place to raise kids, and though the Fort Worth school district leaves a lot to be desired, there are good programs within it if you are willing to search them out.
My oldest attends the local county college, while my youngest daughter and my son are in high school- a Senior and a Junior respectively. I often think back to the "good ol' days" at Ruskin as they go through their high school career, but somehow their experience seems much shallower than mine was. Maybe our school was smaller, maybe the teachers were more involved, or maybe it was just a simpler time with not so much pressure to perform. While I used to gripe about the assignments Mr. Hester gave in Math Analysis, I was mostly prepared for college when I got my high school diploma. Wasn't it geometry teacher Mr. Hoskins that instituted the "red ring gang" by making offenders sit in the "green recliner"? Do you think a teacher could get by making a student sit in the trashcan today? Just thinking about it seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen (no offense to the lawyers in our class).
I do have a few hobbies, like golf and racquetball. The past few years my spare time seems to have been consumed by teaching classes on-line for the University of Phoenix. Sometime when I’m able to retire from my present job, I want to teach college full time (not on-line, in at a regular college). That seems appealing to me, with the ever-changing challenge of new students and the ample time off to do some traveling between terms.
Last year my parents moved into an assisted living apartment here in Fort Worth. I’m glad to have them close by. We sold their house last June; they’d lived a block from the high school for over 50 years. You’d think it would be sad to lose those “roots”, but in reality those roots have only been in my memories for the last 25 years anyway. When we all graduated a new door opened and we moved on, letting others claim “our” school as their own.
Well there is much that has happened in the past twenty-five years, but if I wrote it all here we’d have nothing to talk about in June. I can’t wait to relive some of the “glory days” as well as catch up with the events in your lives. See you at the reunion!

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
