Today's Featured Biography
Hugh Shawhan, II
I spent 4 years on active duty with U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959. Migrated to California in 1960 and lived there until August 2009.
In 1962 I went to work for the California Division of Highways, which later became the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). Started out in Los Angeles as an engineering draftsperson. Moved to Sacramento in 1971 and spent the next 30 years working in various administrative and planning jobs until I retired in 2001 as a Senior Transportation Planner. After moving to Sacramento, I decided to give college a serious try. Worked full time while going to school and graduated in 1977 (it took me six years going days and nights) with a Bachlor of Science in Public Administration.
March 2008 Update:
After 6+ years of retirement, I felt slighly restless and under utilized, I applied for a retired annuitant position with my old employer. I was rehired March 25, 2008 as a Senior Transportation Planner in the California Department of Transportation's Research and Innovation Division. I worked for the same boss that I had when I retired. Where some things have changed, some have remained the same. I enjoyed the opportunity to contribute once again to the improvement of California's transportation (highways, freeways and mass transit) systems. The work was great and the challenges rewarding when solved.
November 2008 Update:
I was married for 46 years until my wife and I separated in October 2008 and are now divorced.
January 2009 Update:
Life is still good and the future holds great promise. Sometimes when the harsh winds in life close one door, there is a sweet and gentle breeze that comes along to open another. I recently experienced that breeze in the form of someone from my high school days, someone who once was very special and is even more special today.
June 2009 Update:
I received word the other day that my services with the State of California, Department of Transportation will be terminated on July 30, 2009. At that time I plan to move back to Kalispell and restart my life with my high school sweetheart and spend my remaining years hunting, fishing and traveling with Carol.
August 2010 Update:
Just celebrated my first year back in the beautiful Flathead Valley since 1960. Recently attended the Nifty 50s Reunion and had an opportunity to visit with many old friends and classmates. It has been 35 years since I last attended a class reunion and some of you have gotten a little grayer and added a few pounds here and there, as I have. But your smiling faces and happy voices are the same. Good to see you all again.
I still believe that any day you can wake up to is going to be a good day. I wish all my classmates many good days to come.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
