Today's Featured Biography
Sandra Sica Fortner
Dr. Sandra "Sam" Fortner
My academic journey has involved many benchmarks. I received an A.S. in Education and an A.S. in General Studies from Tidewater Community College in 1983. I received a B.S. in Education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia in 1985. Then after 16 years in the classroom, I took another giant leap. I obtained a Masters in Education at Regent in 2001, as well as CAGS from Regent University in 2003. I graduated from Regent University with a Doctorate in Education with an emphasis on staff development and adult education in May of 2004. In 2006, I obtained an administrative and supervision prek-12 endorsement to my teaching license.
Here's some more background information:
*My doctoral study was "Examining Pedagogical Practices using Brain-Based Learning in Multiple Intelligences Theory." Fifty Norfolk Public Schools Middle School English teachers participated in this correlational study!
*I have taught Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (CIA) at Regent for twelve years to graduates and three years to undergraduates.
*Overall, I have been working for Norfolk Public Schools for 29 years and Regent University for 13 years.
I taught English in Norfolk, Virginia, for 24 years and served as an English department chairperson for seven years.
*Currently, I am the Secondary Instructional Specialist for Alternative Programs for Norfolk Public Schools in Norfolk, Virginia, as well as the School Test Coordinator. I thoroughly enjoy this position!
*In 2012, I served as Acting Coordinator for Secondary Staffing for Norfolk Public Schools Human Resources. Over 12 weeks, I hired 83 teachers. I assisted Norfolk until they found someone for this position. I was honored to be asked to serve and did so!
*I have been involved with the ATLAS (Authentic Teaching and Learning for All Students) educational reform movement housed at the Educational Development Center - Harvard University since 1993. As a result, I have worked as a consultant with the Philadelphia, PA, Broward County, FL, and Memphis, TN school systems providing in-services regarding Exhibitions, backward design, alternative assessments, and multiple intelligences.
*I have had three units published through Harvard University and one teacher's edition to Charley Skedaddle via Permabound Publications and an article on Multiple Intelligences found in Bb published by ASCD.
*I have written and revised curriculum for Norfolk Public Schools for 7 years. I wrote the national middle school curriculum for Botanical Gardens in Norfolk,VA for their Eagle Project. I wrote curriculum for Trinity University in Illinois, which included all materials, rubrics, and PowerPoints. Currently, I am reviewing content for a book on how the brain learns for Bridgepoint Education Publishers.
*I have presented internationally, nationally, state-wide, and locally on numerous topics associated with this course.
*I am blessed to be married to Neal Fortner and have a wonderful daughter, Jessica, who is 35 years-old! My husband is a cartographer/researcher, and my daughter is a master esthetician. I also have two sweet dogs. Oscar is a 9 year-old miniature rat terrier, and Tinee Fox is an 8 year-old Labrador/Skiperke mix. If you want to learn more, check out Oscar’s Alphabet Book from the Virginia Beach library, download the e-book, or order from Amazon.com.
*I love the Lord, and He has truly blessed me. "Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight thyself in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart." (Psalm 37:2-4)
*Make the most of this time in your life. The sincere spiritual and intrinsic satisfaction you will experience is beyond description. It's all part of God's plan. Blessings!
