Anne Toporek Long
I was first married in 1972, moving to Buffalo, NY. Relocated to Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX in 1977, and was then widowed in 1980. Worked in the secretarial field, which I really loved, from 1967 - 1980, including positions at Marine Midland Bank (now HSBC), Westwood Pharmaceuticals, and Kelly Services, a temporary agency.
Completed 3 semesters at Univ. of TX at Arlington starting in 1981, then returned to the working world at IBM in 1984, again as a secretary, where I met my current husband, Hal. I left IBM in 1990, the same year Hal & I were married, and retired from the workplace for a number of years.
In 1992, we moved to NW Arkansas, where Hal earned his masters in Adult Education, and where I'm once again involved in the temporary help field, having returned to Kelly.
I've enjoyed travel for most of my life, including a trip to see family and friends on the west coast in 1970. The next year, made a month-long sojourn with my parents and sister, Nancy, to the same area.
It seems the travel bug came and stayed, as trips followed to Toronto, Maine, the long drive south to Key West, and visits to Buffalo and several to see my sister and her husband in NE Nebraska. My greatest love in the realm of travel, however, is Great Britain. Went there in 1983 and again in 1986, and I plan to venture over there one more time before retirement. I'm a firm believer in reincarnation, and my love of that land and things British reinforces that. Living in that environment, even for just a couple of weeks, deeply touches my very soul. Each visit has felt like a homecoming.
I greatly enjoy reading, knitting, and gardening, and I "blame" the nuns at St. Francis for having instilled in me a love of the first. John, Jean, Judy, Puff & Spot were just the tip of the iceberg! I also have never tired of sitting around a campfire and just wish I could do that a lot more often. Hal isn't into that kind of thing, so I've only been able to go, so far, when friends have extended an invitation. One of these days I'll have to go on my own a time or two. During the first trip to Britain, I also discovered a love of counted cross-stitch. I'd never been able to figure out how anyone could have fun counting little x's, but let someone talk me into buying a kit before the trip. As the plane whisked us across the Atlantic and the other passengers slept in the darkened cabin, my overhead light was the only one on as I fell in love with the x's. Once my dominant hand heals from some 2009 surgery, I'll be resuming that hobby.
Hal and I lived in rental housing for many years due to our having to make child support payments. It was with great joy, then, that we finally purchased a home of our own in November 2008. We've really gotten into the swing of it: planting veggies and flowers, painting (yuk), mowing, etc. The neighbors on our block all look out for one another, which makes for safer surroundings. I feel a deep contentment now that we're in our own place.
I'd very much like to trade emails with former classmates. Hope to hear from someone soon!
