Today's Featured Biography
Randall Knoll
Keeping the tradition of a science geek and foregoing the movie theatre business, I graduated from Augustana College majoring in Physics & Mathematics and continued on for a Masters degree in Biophysics and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering (implant material design) at Iowa State University. It was at Iowa State that I met my wife Janet (she is in the education field – special education and currently a high school librarian) and we were married in 1977. I began my corporate career in 1980 at 3M Company, St. Paul Minnesota, managing R&D projects in the health care arena - new polymers for contact lenses, intraocular lenses, and other ophthalmic devices. In 1989, 3M stationed our family in Germany for 18 months while I managed clinical trials for a new implant lens that afforded multifocal functionality. This Foreign Service assignment had significance in presenting a world-view to our family, especially our daughter, Mary Jessica (1980) and son, Michael David (1982). Fortunately, they have both flown from the nest successfully, as Jessie is married (2008) to Chris Nakayama and she is a high school chemistry teacher at Menlo School in Atherton, CA while Mike is employed as a business analyst at Target Corporation Headquarters in Minneapolis.
In 2003, an opportunity presented from Medtronic, Inc where I became the Director of the Intellectual Property Portfolio department managing a group of portfolio managers who oversee invention disclosures, patent analysis, and strategy development for the Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management Division.
For the past eight years, I joined a team of individuals for a week in January (typically the coldest in MN), to do mission work in Jamaica. It is called Mission Jamaica—check it out-- http://www.saintandrews.org/files/saintandrews/files/jamaica/2010%208-pg%20Brochure.pdf
It is great to read our classmate’s bios. Keep them coming! I hope to catch up in September with our 40th anniversary attendees where we can share stories from the past and learn more about current experiences detailing our families, hobbies, travels, interests, retirement plans, etc.
