Today's Featured Biography
Hugh Slemp
1962! Looking back now makes me miss the great, slow paced times that we had, but I wouldn't go back because of some of the great things that I would have missed.
I left Mountain City to attend college in Hickory, NC. I moved to Bristol where I met this young lady that I ended up marrying. Then I had to go to work. I worked at Bristol Steel for 26 years until they closed the doors and laid off 2400 employees. I worked a couple of other jobs, not satisfied, until my mother passed away. I got to thinking about changing professions. I worked at Henson Funeral Home, almost free, and then went to Atlanta to attend a mortuary college in 1992. After getting a degree, I worked for a couple of funeral homes, got my state licenses in Tennessee and Virginia and worked my way up to assistant Manager. Danny Cullop called me in 2005 to manage the new funeral home in Mountain City, which I did til semi-retirement. I still work when needed.
The young lady I mentioned above is Loretta. We met in Bristol and were married some five months later. We have two daughters, Leslie and Pam, four grandchildren and a great grandson. We served in the Baptist Church as Sunday school teachers, Children's Church Directors, Bus Directors, and I served as Deacon. We love to travel ($3 plus a gallon may slow us down), woodworking and gardening. Fondest high school memories are ballgames, King Bee, tricks that we played on teachers, mischievous things that people keep reminding me of. I truly enjoy my classmates coming in the funeral home and saying, 'Do you remember when ------?'
It has been fifty year circle in which we have all changed, but in so many ways, we are still the same. Look around at each other and remember all the great memories but also look for the missing faces. Many could not be here for some reason or other and some have gone before us. Does this tell us something? Appreciate what we have been given and enjoy what we have left.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
