Today's Featured Biography
Paula Jenkins Enquist
After high school, I went to Southern Utah State College. It is now Southern Utah University. I had a four year full ride scholarship, but I left after one semester since my two little sisters who were almost 10 & 15 years younger than me kept calling asking me to come home. My mom was having a hard time coping since my older brother was in Vietnam.
I worked for the State of Utah most my working life. I worked for the Dept. of Public Safety, Drivers License & Criminal Identification from Nov. 1970 to June 1977,. I married my husband John Patrick Enquist Nov. 15, 1973. I quit Criminal Identification in June to have my first child. In between having my first child and my last child in 1981, I went to work at various places until I finally settled down with the State of Utah, Office of Recovery Services in Sept. 1981. My husband's job then took us out of state for two years. We came back home in Aug. 1985. I began working for the Office of Recovery Services again in Oct. 1985. I retired on July 31, 2009 as a manager for the Children in Care Program for the Office of Recovery Services.
I had three children. My first child, McKenna, was born 7-7-77. We had our daughter home for 2 weeks until I noticed a problem with her. She went into Cottonwood hosp. on 7-22-77 and was transferred to PCMC the next morning due to Congenital Heart Defects. It was a wild ride since her heart had stopped three times. Once while in the ambulance on the way to PCMC. Once as soon as she got to the emergency room and once when they were performing a heart cath that evening to see what heart problems she had. She was tough though, at 5 lbs. 5 1/2 ounces she pulled out her own respirator, 7-26-77, which was a surprise to everyone. It was great being to hold her without that darn tube in the way. I thought for sure the doc was going to put it back in, but when he came in he said 'Apparently she thinks she doesn't need it anymore,' so she went without it until her surgery on 8-15-77. She passed away in open heart surgery on that day.
I then had two boys, Jeff and Neil. Jeff was born New Years Eve in 1978. He was two weeks early. I think he wanted to screw up my New Years Eve from that day forward. Not really, but he sure messed up my plans that year.
Neil was born 2-5-1981. He was about 6 to 8 weeks premature. My doctor told me I would keep having my babies earlier and earlier, so Neil was my last. I figured two out of three healthy babies were better than taking chances having medical problems with my babies being more and more premature.
I called my boys my pride and joy.
Jeff was my pride since he was and is very smart. He taught himself to read at age 3 thanks to Sesame Street. He wanted to be an astronaut until the Challenger blew up when he was watching the take off in the first grade. He was so distraught; I had to get him from school. We then went to the library to find out what happened. He knew before the experts who built the O-rings for the Challenger knew.
Jeff then wanted to become a doctor until he worked as a Medical Assistant and then Program Coordinator for the Ryan White Program for the HIV/AID's Clinic at the U of U while going to school there and graduating with a bachelors degree in Public Health. He said doctors have too much paperwork and regulations. Talk about paperwork and laws, he became an attorney.
Neil has
ADHD and I was worried about him ever being able to hold down a job. He kept me on my toes all through his childhood and teen years, but he always made me laugh whenever I was unhappy. That's why he was my Joy. I didn't know what he would be, but he was made to be a firefighter. He has worked his way up from an EMT/firefighter to an Engineer for Park City.
We moved into our home here in Sandy six months after we were married. We have been living in our home since May 8, 1974 except for two years when my husband's job took us to Pocatello, Idaho for 18 months and then to Denver, Colorado for 6 months. We rented out our home during that time.
I love my life and the many friends I have made along the way. Some I have had for a long time, some only for a short time and then they were gone, but I cherished every minute with them. Some friends I had in elementary, junior high and high school and because of the reunions, we have become reacquainted. It is like we were never apart. Some classmates I never ran around with in high school, but we have become friends. I am thankful I have become friends with people who grew up with me. I hope we stay in touch for a long time.
I could not have had a better man to marry than my husband, Pat. He has brought me much love and happiness than I ever thought possible. I love him more and more each day. I don't know what I would do without him.
Family is everything. They ground me and I love being around them. I have four grandchildren, three grandsons but only one granddaughter. She is very smart like her father and this year (2024) she is graduating from the U of U.
You need to spend time with everyone you love, all your friends, acquaintances, people you even have disagreements. You never know when you may lose them and you wish you had them back.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
