Shelley Dunn Chaves
I thought I'd add a bit more detail to my bio since I'm not going to be able to make it to the reunion on August 2.
I've reinvented myself over and over again since high school - I graduated from BYU in 1972 in English. I taught at Pleasant Grove HS for 2 years and then at Provo High for two more, serving on the faculty with many of the same teachers who had seemed so "old" only a few years before.
I then moved to CA, working for a textbook publisher, where I met my husband, Art Chaves. He graduated from Stanford in petroleum engineering, and we followed that fickle field to Alaska, then to Texas. Our first two children, Nick and Tim, were born in the the desolation of the frozen North (no, I did NOT like living there!), and had we stayed in Texas much longer, our beautiful daughter Sarah would have been born in the hot and humid Dallas area. However, at about that time, 22 years ago, petroleum took a large drop, we dropped out, and took that opportunity to return to Utah. We live in the heart of old Draper, and love it here. Art completed a Masters in Mechanical Engineering to enable us to leave the petroleum industry, and I continued as a full-time mom until my kids were all out of elementary school.
At that time I started a home desk-top publishing business that in a roundabout way led to my present position as Corporate Secretary at IFA. (Not gonna explain that one… check the website!)
Our greatest joy in life is our family – our two sons are married and we have just welcomed our first grandson, with a litte granddaughter due in 6 weeks. In the meantime, we are crazily planning a wedding for our daughter. Our kids are hard workers, successful adults, and even seem to still kind of like hanging out with Mom and Dad, so we’re pretty happy with them!
We occasionally run into some of the old gang at church or school events or restaurants in the Salt Lake area ... hard to believe so much time has passed! Happy 40th to everyone!
