Today's Featured Biography
Dan Hausel
After graduating from South, things started to fall in place. I was sooo bored in public school & getting away from high school gave me the opportunity to mentally grow & become more creative. In high school, I really enjoyed playing lead guitar in a popular rock n' roll band (Churchmen - see 'Then' photograph) but I hoped there was more to life.
After South, I became a polymath: a geologist (http://GemHunter.webs.com), martial artist (http://Grandmaster.pbwiki.com), writer (http://DanHauselAuthor.pbwiki.com), public speaker, astronomer, musician & artist. I own a geological consulting firm, a martial arts school, and an international martial arts association (http://Seiyo-ShorinRyu.com). I became the best I could be at the things I enjoyed & not so good at the things that bored me – my secret was not being bored.
I became one of the top geologists in the nation. I worked with colored gemstones, diamonds & old rocks (http://wygmstn.blogspot.com/). I had the opportunity to work with some of the first lunar samples from the Apollo missions & made terrestrial mineral discoveries including dozens of gold deposits, diamond deposits, some platinum & nickel & many colored gemstone deposits including the largest gem iolites in the world (http://iolite-wyoming.blogspot.com). I mapped the largest fields of kimberlite (a host rock for diamond - http://discussionsondiamonds.blogspot.com) in the US. Wish I could dig up our old counselor Ms. Monay - she told my parents they should send me to the military as I didn't have what it took to graduate from college - where do they get these people?).
Along the way, I discovered one of the largest gold deposits in North America (Donlin Creek, Alaska - http://2009pdac.blogspot.com) and another major gold deposit in central Wyoming (Rattlesnake Hills - http://www.casperjournal.com/news/article_7637b7ce-a74e-5a1d-991b-9b37f35e7ad6.html).
I graduated from the University of Utah with BS & MS in Geology. I worked for the Wyoming Geological Survey at the University of Wyoming and also for several mining companies as a consultant. I retired from the WGS in January of 2007 & started a private consulting firm for mineral exploration and at the same time accepted a position as Vice President of Exploration for an international diamond company (http://www.abnnewswire.net/press/en/44155/Diamonex-Limited.html).
I'm a writer, a Hall of Fame martial artist (http://manofyear.blogspot.com), public speaker & artist. I've contributed to 72 books, authored >550 professional & public interest articles & papers & geological maps.
Speaking of martial arts, I excelled in martial arts & have certifications in 18 martial arts. I earned the highest rank possible in Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate [10th degree black belt) in 2004 & Sokeship (Grandmaster) of Shorin-Ryu karate (www.Seiyo-ShorinRyu.com) in 1999. I’ve been inducted into 16 Halls-of-Fame for martial arts as well as for my contributions to Geological Sciences & teaching.
My accomplishments are in several WHO'S WHO volumes (including Who's Who in the West, America, World, 21st century, Science and Engineering, 1996 IBC's International Man of the Year, 1996 ABI's Man of the Year, 2000 Notable American Men & others). Recently I was awarded the Archimedes Award for Geological Sciences, recognized as one of top 100 scientists in the world, and awarded the 2009 Thayer Lindsley Award for a Major International Mineral Discovery.
I accidentally discovered I could sketch in 1990. I even impressed myself with this ability. Some of my sketches appear on book covers, illustrations in books, greeting cards, etc(http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/dan-hausel.html).
After I left (escaped) Utah, I moved to Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Casper, spent 30 years in Laramie. I worked all over the US, Alaska, Canada & Australia.
I recently moved to Gilbert, Arizona after suffering a mid-life crisis. Instead of buying a Harley, I bought Harley Stock. After 32 years of marriage, I got a divorce. I'm romantic and love to cuddle and snuggle - she didn't. So, after I moved to Gilbert, I married Sharon Hall, who I love very much.
I keep physically fit & train 5 to 6 times a week in martial arts and weight training, and teach 8 martial arts classes each week (http://arizonakarate.webs.com/) when I'm not out beating on rocks.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
