So, what have I done over the past 20 years? I received a B.S. double majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science from Va. Tech in 1993. I was a co-op student at Bell Northern Research (now Nortel Networks) in RTP, NC from 1990-1991. After getting my bachelor's I went to work at Pacific Northwest National Labs in Richland, WA from 1993-1994. I decided to return to Va. Tech to get a Ph.D. in Computer Science and become a university professor. I finished my M.S. in 1996 and Ph.D. in 2000.
During graduate school, I was an intern at Sun Microsystems in Cupertino, CA working on Java in 1996-1997. My office was next to James Gosling, one of the creators of the Java language. That's been a highlight in my professional life.
I taught for 1 year at Va. Tech in 2000-2001, and then moved to my current position at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. I just received tenure in 2008, a mere 14 years after starting down the proverbial yellow brick road. My research is in bioinformatics, data mining, text mining, and machine learning. I'm also interested in various kinds of parallel and distributed computing like the Google/IBM cloud computing initiatives.
I'm on my second marriage, after a 5 year marriage ended in 2002 (the end of which is a story best told over a beer or two). I've been married to Erica since 2004 and have a son Parker who is 2 and daughter Larkin who is almost 10 months.
I've been fortunate to travel a bit around the world. I've been to: Munich, Germany; Vienna and Linz, Austria; Budapest, Hungary; Ottawa, Banff, and Vancouver, Canada; St. Andrews, Scotland (and most of the rest of Scotland); Madrid, Spain; and most recently New Delhi, Jaipur, Agra, and Hyderabad, India.
