Steven Stanfield Means

Deb and I married in May 2003 as the sun set on Kahikili Beach just north of Lahaina Town, Maui. Early in 2004 we moved into a remarkably original 1887 Victorian Cottage overlooking the village of Myrtle Point, Oregon, which lies a half hour up the Coquille River from Bandon by the Sea, protected, warm, clean and quiet, passed by, unimproved, not even a strip mall.

Life here is a bit like Bellevue was when some of us went to Kindergarten at Overlake Elementary back in 1948.

I have founded a museum here which I now direct. The Coos County Fairgrounds Museum serves The Land of the Oregon Myrtle, SW Oregon along the coast from Brookings to Florence. For me the project includes considerable research, collection, identification and writing, some of which is available on the web sites included in this profile.

My FAMILY resides primarily in the Puget Sound area. Mom passed at age 96 on March 1, 2016. Brother Stan and wife Mary overlook the old floating bridge from the Seattle side, sister Jan has three acres near Kingston, son Jason married Jennifer Knorr on the beach close to where Deb and I were married. They have son Jackson, new to this world in January of 2016. Son Travis and family in Lake Stevens with the three granddaughters, as of Spring 2016 Ariana is in Tenth Grad, Hailey in Eighth and Abigail in Sixth.

I retired from public school teaching and coaching (Bellevue Junior, then Sammamish High) in 1998 after 28 years. I had previously done some assistant teaching at the college level.

I am still active with projects based from Germany (The Virtual Silk Road, now completed). Several themes from my teaching career continue as everyday endeavors: Project Based Learning, Interdisciplinary Studies, Web Education ( I helped start the Geometry Forum at Swarthmore College beginning in 1993, it is now the Math Forum).

I have composed a few books which integrate photography and text. Some are histories, such as The Dement Family Booklet, which has two volumes, the Replica Edition and the Backstory. A thousand page book called RIVERs explores the essential similarities in human religious, theological, spiritual and philosophical thought. I am working on a simpler version, perhaps to be called STREAMs.

I maintain a few dozen web sites. My high school students created internet linkable sites well before the emergence of the integrated web browser (in 1993 Mosaic became available) and our Sammamish web work spread across the Bellevue School District making us one of the first K-12 web presences. Some of that is preserved in archives which only reach back to about 1996. The early work disappeared in electronic form as the servers and storage units owned by the BSD wore out and were replaced and the methods of access became clumsy and obsolete.

Close friend, classmate Bill Cheeseman, and I still share delight in the devices on a daily basis.
