20 Year Reunion Announcement!
|
**WE NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU NOW** GENERAL H. H. ARNOLD THE CLASS OF 1988 20 YEAR REUNION |
|
Friday,
November
7,
2008 - 10:00 am
|
AUSTIN, TEXAS |
EVENT COST: CHEAP!! Just airfare and a tip jar. We're doing this family style... |
The CLASS of 1988 is hosting their 20 YEAR REUNION in AUSTIN, TX - NOV 7-9, 2008
The November date works best for more people... just too many babies being born in late September! We're going with 7-9 to keep from getting too close to the holidays...
THE PLAN::..
Renting a house for the entire weekend - large enough to handle us crashing there. The owners are at Tinker AFB, so they are sympathetic to our cause.
We need to know if you are planning to stay at the event or at a nearby hotel. We'll be 10 miles from the airport, 5 miles from downtown so there will be plenty to choose from, ranging from $50-250/night. I'll be sending out a list soon.
THE AGENDA::..
Flexible. We are renting a house so we'll have a home base and all the freedom we want to make plans on the spur of the moment. We want to be able to break out into groups of closer friends, or plan larger outings for all of us - bottom line is we have the choice. And we won't get kicked out if we just want to hang at home base and party on the spot.
Now for the fun part...

Crazy, huh. This one is going to be nuts. It'll be like walking down senior hall. Are you ready for it? Don't worry... quite a few of us are nervous about it, that's natural. We're all feeling it. Just remember that we've got a pretty strong connection and it's going to work out.
This event is being billed as the '88 20 year reunion, but clearly, we've got friends who spill over into '87 and '89. This is NOT an all years or even an 80s era event. It's class of '88 with a few close by friends. Not trying to be exclusionary, just keeping it close to home, so to speak.
THE FINANCES::...
Here's the deal. A lot of us aren't rolling in the dough. I know I'm not. And that's okay. If you're planning to stay at the event, we're going to go in on a headcount and split the cost of the house. With enough people, it will be way cheaper than a hotel. Right now, I'm guessing it will be about $20-30/night. If you're planning on staying at a nearby hotel, I'll simply ask you to show some love and contribute to the family pot o' dough.
IF finances are difficult, talk to me one-on-one. There are a few of us who are in a situation where managing the flight is about all we can handle. That's okay. We still want you with us. I'll be unveiling some fund raising stuff we can buy (think: Christmas), there's also going to be a donating option online, probably through PayPal. I'll definitely get the word out when we go live with that stuff.
In the meantime, MARK YOUR CALENDARS:
NOVEMBER 7-9, 2008 AUSTIN, TX
I'm going to be there. Are you?
I just sent in the deposit to secure the house for the weekend. It's ON!

New update: May 2nd, 2008
I love profiles. Remember what I was like in high school? Now, add 20 years. There you go. Seriously, I''m not kidding.
Okay, a REAL update. Don''t be skerred, k?
After high school, I hung out in Wiesbaden for a few years. After all, it is home. One thing all of you have in common is when you showed up in Wiesbaden, I was there. When you left Wiesbaden, I was there. Funny, huh?
I worked on base (Lindsay Air Station) and got married to an Air Force guy, surprise surprise. And headed to England. Four years, two babies later and a little jaded, I was in Oklahoma City and choosing a divorce to go with a little slice of independence. Heh heh. I took on a job with a company called Vector Marketing, who distribute Cutco Cutlery... yes, the really good knives that most college students have represented at some point... Even Mr. Fitzsimmons. :)
I was offered a promotion into the region headquarters in Dallas, TX. I spent six years working there, moving my way up into management. (Ack! Lindy, a manager?! Yes. hahaha) I was an event planner, executive assistant, office manager, program coordinator, project manager, DJ, graphic designer, PR rep, the list goes on and on. It was quite an experience and I''m glad to be done with the fast pace of sales, marketing and recruiting.
I''ve had a couple of interesting relationships along the way... a long term live in... apparently, I was a sugar momma and didn''t realize it. Then I went digging in the past and all I got was dirty with an unrequited love in the Air Force from our Lindsay days (he was a Basic Training Instructor, yikes). Then I got engaged to someone from England but the timing just didn''t work out. Get the feeling my life is a bit like a Telemundo soap opera?
Update: My girls are 12 and 13, both of them nearing birthdays since they are 10 months and 3 weeks apart. Yeah. I did that. And it''s worked out perfectly.
I relocated to Austin on New Year''s Eve, December 31st, 2004, living within three miles of Chris O''Quinn and my sister, Tracy Hirschman, class of ''85. Austin is right up my alley, full of artists, activists and vegetarians. Well, I''m still working on some of that. I seem to be a bit of a hippy. I''m working at the University of Texas in the Computer Sciences department in administration for a bunch of Research Scientists who specialize in Cybersecurity. It''s a very cool thing so far.
I had a chance to catch up with Mike Johnson about a year ago. Guys, I must tell you, it''s times like these that are precious and rare. Just an hour of conversation with someone you knew way back when.. it''s a must-do. And I''m thankful to Mike for picking up that phone and suffering through my joking/abrasive identity check, just because there are a gazillion Mike Johnson''s in the world and only one that means anything to me.. By the way, that''s Mike ''G'' Johnson. ;) I also attended a mini-reunion in January of 2008, where I reconnected with Kristanne Bohner Heaton, JoAnn Takasaki, Jeff Plies and Jennifer Birdsell Taylor, all of ''87. We had an absolute blast. Most recently, I hung out with Chris O''Quinn, Lori Wiseman and Miriam Bergmann in March 2008. I just can''t tell you how much fun it is to be in the company of our classmates. There''s no explaining where you come from, no describing Germany or overseas and/or military culture.. you get right to the fun, the memories, the shared experiences and filling the last 20 years. Good, good times.
I just chatted with Tony ''Ricardo'' Moore on the phone yesterday (5/01/08)... he and I are currently throwing together another HH Arnold site with tons of bells and whistles. Notice the links in my bio... THEY BE LIVE!
Oh, by the way, I got married. (for all my lurkers, and I have a few) I managed to find myself a Canadian boy. And he''s who I am supposed to be hanging oot and aboot with, this I know.. we got married in a hilarious justice o'' the peace ceremony in some podunk town called Blanco, about 40 miles outside of Austin. One of these days, I''m planning on posting video footage from it.. trust me, it''ll make you fall off your seat laughing.. with the sound of the receptionist''s typing wafting over our vow exchange and the judge waving to every pickup truck that passed by.. it''s worth seeing..
Haven''t decided if babies are in our future.. we''ll see.. (do I really want to be pregnant again?)
More update:
I''ve been living 30 miles north of Austin for almost a year now. I spend my free time dodging the wildlife on our hillside.. I had never seen a scorpion close up before I moved, but I''m good now.. I''ve got 2 and a half rugged acres of small mountainside to piddle around on. I''ve finally started that garden and things are looking promising. Everyday, we learn a little more about how to lighten our footprint. Rather than do the trendy thing of slapping a ''green'' label on everything (or believing it), we actually try to make a difference in how we''re living - wow, that sounds pompous. Anyway, it''s going swimmingly. Just don''t bring up the fact that all our efforts don''t make much of a dent in the overall scheme. That''s depressing.
We're swimming in cats right now.. I have more cats than I know what to do with. I guess that's to be expected when you take in every stray that crosses your path. The latest? A very pregnant little orange and white love ball showed up and just couldn't get enough of us. We're so honored! She decided to grace us with her liter. All four and a half of them. She had them under our house and is currently residing in our master bath. This is my life. *snicker*
I''ve thrown up some pictures of Wiesbaden, if you want to take a look. It is so much fun to think about those days. Eventually, I will add more to it..

If you find your way here, please leave some writing on the wall and let us know. :)
A big thank you to Jenn, Caroline, Faithe, Arlisa and RaDonna for being a sounding board and offering feedback and advice while we shape up our reunion.
I''m looking forward to this one in a big bad way.
