Today's Featured Biography
Margaret Lewis
After graduation, I attended Oakland City College for a semester, then got married. We moved to New York for a couple of years. I returned to Berk. with daughter Ann and worked at various jobs for a year or so. Hooked up with second husband and moved to S.F. We developed a business designing and selling lapel buttons and were very successful for a few years. After son Gimli was born, and the drive-by shootings started, we moved north to Mendocino County. Daughter Melody was born there and we bought some property in Humboldt County and moved there to 'live on the land'.
That relationship dissolved and I spent 2 and a half years in New Mexico in several living situations, mostly in very rural groups.
Returning to the Bay Area in 1972, I attended the College of Alameda in an industrial arts program. A year later I moved back to Humboldt and finished out my AA degree at College of the Redwoods.
The degree was in industrial arts, but I mostly took automotive courses. I worked for a couple of years as a school bus mechanic and driver and then for a local clothing manufacturer, eventually becoming his production manager. Also worked (at a later time) for 2 women producing bathing suits.
I did some daycare work with pre-schoolers.
Since then I have done janitorial contract work,driven a rural mail route, managed the Eureka Symphony, designed and taught a music and movement class for toddlers and preschoolers and taught music in 3 local elementary schools. Now I do in home care for IHSS recipients and am on a union negotiating team for workers in our county.
I have kept up with music (playing viola) somewhat and go to a yearly chamber music workshop at Humboldt State. Also play in a quartet and other ensembles.
I live by myself just outside of Garberville
in a beautiful setting by the river. I got a real thrill the other day when a bald eagle flew right over my house!
I can't believe it's been 50 years since our days at Fremont!
