Today's Featured Biography
Neil Fossum
After graduation I went to the USAF Academy, graduated in 1982, and went to pilot training in Enid, Oklahoma. Three quarters the way through training I married Cindy Dering(USAFA Class 1983). My first assignment was to come back to Enid as an instructor in the T-38 (looks like the bad guy jet in Top Gun).
In 1987 I transferred to San Antonio training new instructor pilots, again in the T-38. At the same time Cindy was transferred to Dayton, OH to get her Masters at the Air Force Institute of Technology(AFIT). She had secured an assignment to University of Texas (Austin), but was rerouted after I transferred. That was a very long 2 years and I left the Air Force in 1989 when my service committment was up.
I went to work for Delta Air Lines and was based at DFW while Cindy was a contract administrator for the F-16 at the plant in Ft Worth, TX. In 1991 the Air Force sent Cindy to Arizona State to get her PhD, followed by a teaching assignment back at AFIT in Dayton. Her last assignment was in Boston before she retired in 2003.
I had no problem following her around flying the 727, 737, L1011, 737-800, and now the 777. I flew as Captain for 3 years, but with all the turmoil in the airline industry, I bid back to copilot when Delta parked all old 737s in the desert.
I fly international now mainly to Sydney, but occasionally go other places, mostly in Asia. My flights are all very long, 12-16 hours, but for some wierd reason, I am able to adjust fairly easily to all the time changes.
Meanwhile, Cindy travels the country teaching week-long seminars to civil servants on how to spend your tax dollars. Its scary how inept some of her students are - the less money we give them to spend the better! Anyway, she teaches 1 or 2 seminars a month and I'm able to chase her around the country on my days off.
When we're home, we live in Monument, CO - pretty much right outside the gate of the Academy. We have season tickets to football and hockey and have lots of friends who've also returned to the roost. The best way to get a hold of me is via e-mail. Cheers all!
