Commuted to U of I at Navy Pier my freshman year, then transferred to Champaign/Urbana. Graduated in ’64 with an English Lit major. Started my Masters in Library Science at U of I in June of ’64; married Feb. 1965; left for a year of Army travel with my husband (24 moves in our first two years!); worked at Austin Peay State College Library in Clarksville, TN while David was stationed at nearby Ft. Campbell, KY; returned to Champaign to complete my MSLS in June ’66 when David had his first tour in Vietnam. Completed this degree Jan ’67.
My first post-degree job was as Head Librarian at the Ft. Benning Main Post Library, Columbus, GA. I would tell future employees that on my first job, I was saluted! As a basic training post, Ft. Benning had many recruits who adhered to the adage “If it moves, salute it!” I wore a DOD uniform and garrison cap (and white gloves!), so there was probably some reason to consider saluting!
We moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1969 when David returned from his second tour in Vietnam and took a final post at Ft. Lewis, WA. We settled in Portland, OR and built a passive solar home in Boring, OR in 1980. After child-rearing years, I returned to library work with CH2M Hill, an international engineering firm, and also did Business Development for their Portland office. In 1986 I accepted a job with a local utility, Portland General Electric, to develop a library in Tualatin, OR with energy efficiency information for engineers and architects. I transferred to the PGE corporate library and helped develop the company’s Intranet and taught staff to use a new phenomenon: the Internet. My husband retired from 28 years of Army service and 29 years of teaching middle school. I retired in 2003 after several roller coaster years when PGE was owned by Enron! Nothing like being part of history!
Our retirement has allowed us more time with our two grandchildren. We also have been busy with elder care for relatives: moved my mom and David’s dad to the same retirement home in Oregon. Mom is still loyal to Illinois and has not bought into the Oregon mystique. She thinks we have messy forests and our main industry is rescuing people!
In 2007 we built our retirement home in Silverton, location of The Oregon Garden. We enjoy gardening, genealogy, swimming and square dancing (one of my college PE classes that I loved!). Travel is also in the picture with a goal of staying at the historic lodges of the National Parks. A 2005 Elderhostel trip to Timberline Lodge at Mt Hood (forty miles from home) started this goal.

"Thank you so much for doing this. I appreciate it"
"We had our 50th reunion in June. It was a great success in large part due to the creation and use of the Classreport web site. Of our 379 classmates, we've located 322 and confirmed another 46 are deceased. We've had 7,900 hits in less than a year. Thanks for making available a great product that we will continue to use!"
"My name is Debbie and I'm a teacher. I came across your page while searching for information about genealogy for an upcoming student project. The resources you have are very helpful! I just wanted to thank you and thought you should know how useful it is as it's made collecting information a lot easier."
