I went to NIU after graduation to be an elementary education teacher. Found out quickly that after years of wanting to be a teacher I did not like it, so I changed my major to sociology and psychology, but that wasn’t the perfect niche either. Left school after three years and ended up in the power transmission field, where I worked for the next 10 years. I learned more about sprockets, roller chain and bearings than I ever wanted to know, but I enjoyed it.
While I was in college I worked on several play productions, doing sets, costumes, props, etc. This was something I really loved doing, and I stayed involved with local community theater groups working at the Old Orchard Country Club dinner theater, and helping found the Camelot Players little theater group. Although I am not active in this anymore, theater is still a passion and I stay current with new Broadway musicals and have quite a collection of original Broadway cast soundtracks. I was also active as a 4H leader for several years with a local 4H group and a group in California.
I love to travel. After several trips out west I decided that I should be living in California. In 1971 I moved to Anaheim for a year, and then back to Illinois, with a plan to return West in the next few years.
Upon my return to the Midwest my life took a new turn. I got involved with fiber arts, and became part owner and eventually owner of The Serendipity Shop in Des Plaines (spinning and weaving supplies). I discovered that when running a business I had no time for spinning and weaving. Sold the shop after 10 years and headed back out west. This time I ended up in the Phoenix area, where I have been since 1982. I worked full time at my weaving, selling my work, managing a cooperative craft gallery, and teaching adults which I loved doing (it turned out teaching was the right profession I just had the wrong age level!) I received a national recognition, “The Certificate of Excellence in Handspinning” in 1983.
About 10 years later, life took yet another turn, and as a favor I started to help out at my sisters publishing company (Eastland Press) long distance, working from home. That job got bigger, and I ended up incorporating and working for a few other small businesses so it eventually became my full time job. I am still doing it today, but just for Eastland Press on a part time basis and still working from home. This leaves time for travel and pursuing all my other interests from fiber arts to genealogy and my new passion - quilting.
