Robin Unruh

After high school, I attended Garden City Community College and continued to play my trombone on an instrumental music scholarship. I received my Associate's Degree in 1989 amazingly as an Honor Student. However, I found myself betwixt & between but not ready to transfer to a university. Hence, I took a year off from college and worked part time at the KSU Extension Service in the weed science division. This taught me I "really" wanted to do something else with my life.
I transferred to St. Mary of the Plains College still playing my trombone and received my Bachelor's degree in Psychology in 1992 and in the process the school itself literally closed it's doors for good!

I quickly found that with only a bachelor's in psychology I was limited with my career options. Hence, I found my strengths in the area of working with youth and then was encouraged by individuals to get my Master's degree in Social Work. The University of Kansas is the place to go for Social Work so after being accepted to "The University of Kansas School of Social Welfare"...that's exactly what I did.

However, I never have done anything the "simple" way. I chose to commute to Lawrence from Garden City while working "full time." I attended classes one day per week from 8:30 am til 6:00 pm. Then driving home to Garden City to maintain my position as Case Manager with foster care children. Fortunately, I did not do this alone. I also couldn't have done this without my family. My younger sister, Cindy, graciously allowed me to stay with her overnight before class while my older sister, Nancy and I where sharing an apartment at the time so she assisted me with "keeping the home fires burning." And my parents...my parents did anything and everything to help me accomplish my goal...baically the same as they have always done.

I am now working as the Program Therapist with the an outpatient mental health program specifically for senior adults at Satanta, KS. My philosophy has become "knowledge for the sake of knowledge." I've been known to take classes just because I have an interest in the subject matter which is somewhat amazing for me.

I am still single. I figure if God intends for me to get married, that guy will "appear." Otherwise, I am content with my life. No biological children, however, I do have two canine beagles, Rudee Jo and Buddee Joe. They are my "pride and joy." I am a "lifer" in Southwest Kansas and I have accepted that even though I never expected it.

I still play my trombone from time to time but have not played publically since grad school. I have had the opportunity play with some jazz bands and concert bands in the area. I still enjoy all types of music and find that it does calm my "inner" beast!
