Aaron Underwood
Lost Shoreline Project
2014 to present
The Lost Shoreline Project, is a expedition of discovery, sharing and awareness.
My mission is to document and share the condition of the eastern Pacific coastline of the Americas by sailing a modified Drascombe long boat along the Shoreline surf break from Prince William Sound, Alaska to Punta Arenas, Chile.
We will intimately explore the shoreline habitat in a unique manner documenting and sharing the conditions of the shoreline. Observing the impacts and changes from industrial pollution, to climate change on the coastal environment and the people that live there.
With our 19 longboat (think Shackleton) we will be able to sail, row and paddle the inaccessible areas of the shoreline for the perspective needed to bring awareness to the changes taking place and the impacts that are the bellwether for us all.
Our boat will be modified with Grand Canyon whitewater dory technology making it virtually unsinkable and have the ability to ride the surf and shoreline break in a way no other craft can.
With my experience of over three decades of planning, organizing and leading multi-week remote wilderness whitewater river expeditions in Alaska and Chile I have the expertise and knowledge to realize this adventures potential of informing the world community of the immense changes taking place on our shorelines.
I have a burning desire to give, share and make a difference.
I have lived the high adventure life of a expedition leader, done the things that are unbelievable to most. My unique experiences are the driving force for me to give the world the perspective of the accelerating changes I have personally witnessed.
This expedition is the culmination of life skills and knowledge I have acquired. I have no desire for notoriety. I simply and honestly wish to help make a difference with knowledge and awareness. My 38 yrs of expeditioning puts me in a unique situation to push the boundaries of what is known and how we know it and how we do it.
Wave shore-break surf riding in a whitewater sailing longboat for approx.14,000 miles of coastal shoreline is what my whole lifes purpose has lead me too.
With daily text uploads of observations, go-pro videos, interviews, and data sampling. We will be able to bring to the world awareness and focus to the condition of the east Pacific coastal shoreline.
We will focus on not only on the environmental health of the shoreline but on the traditional subsistence cultures that live and depend on the shoreline habitat and what they are doing to cope with the changes thrust upon them.
