Today's Featured Biography
Karissa Adkins
GULFPORT, Mississippi – A Dayton, Ohio native and 2010 Northridge High School graduate is helping to build bridges and roads around the world as a member of the U.S. Navy’s Naval Construction Group 2, based in Gulfport, Mississippi.
Karissa Adkins, constructionman, is a steelworker with NCG 2, a headquarters command that oversees all naval construction forces based in the eastern half of the U.S.
“I provide administrative support for the chaplain as well as working with various programs and databases which support the command’s overall readiness,” said Adkins.
Naval construction forces specialize in building structures in areas of conflict. The Sailors that make up these forces are nicknamed “Seabees” and are a unique group in the Navy whose motto is “We build, we fight.”
Seabees are trained as builders and fighters. They not only build bridges, roads, runways and other structures in war zones; they also defend those structures after they’ve built them.
“I love the can do spirit of the Seabees and being able to work as a team to accomplish world wide missions,” said Adkins.
Adkins and the rest of the sailors assigned to NCG 2 are part of the Navy’s construction force that has been around for more than 70 years. Seabees have built entire bases and bridges and bulldozed and paved thousands of miles of roadway and airstrips for the U.S. military all over the world, playing a vital role in every major conflict the U.S. has been involved with since World War II.
Adkins’ commanding officer said he’s proud of the hard work and dedication he sees in the Seabee community.
“Seabees are some the hardest working Sailors in the Navy,” said Capt. John Adametz, Commodore of NCG 2. “They know how to get the job done. They build and fight in some of the harshest and most hostile environments in the world.”
Working with NCG 2 and serving in the U.S. Navy, Adkins said she is learning about herself as a leader and person.
“Serving in the world’s finest Navy makes me more responsible, mature and gives me a sense of pride serving this great nation of ours,” said Adkins.
