Today's Featured Biography
Ron Mason
Ok, here's my story and I'm stickin' to it. On the evening after graduation my mother and brother and me jumped into the loaded pick-up truck and moved to Monroe, Louisiana. My daddy had already gone ahead of us and had a job. North Louisiana is our home.
Anyway, 2 months later I went down to the recruiting station and joined the Navy. A couple of the reasons for joining the Navy instead of waiting to get drafted:I had heard of the beach bunnies in southern California and wanted to get a look at'em and I didn't want to go on the land in Viet Nam. I made 3 WestPac cruises and got an opportunity to see places that I probably wouldn't have seen otherwise.
So 3 years, 10 months and 28 days later in the summer of 1969 I got out of the Navy and went back home to north Louisiana. Four days later I had a job workin' for the local newspaper. Seven months later and wanting to make enough money to get married, I went to work for Olinkraft Paper Mill in Monroe. Michele and I got married and after 4 years of shifting every week and hearing that South Central Bell was hiring, I put in an application and went to work for the phone company a couple of weeks later. Within three years I had been transferred from north to south Louisiana and then to Mobile, Alabama. So 30 years after hiring on with the company I retired in the summer of 2003. I managed to stay retired for 9 months but had messed up my wifes schedule so bad that she sent me back to work. I answered an ad in the newspaper here and went to work in telecommunications for the University of South Alabama and have been there for 5 years. In the spring of 1996 I developed heart trouble and had a single coronary bypass at Providence Hospital at the age of 49. I spent a week there and was the youngest patient in ccu until I was released from there and that morning a 32 year old took my place in ccu. That's when I quit smokin' and started watchin' my diet.
I turned 62 in December 2008 and probably will work till I'm 66. Michele and I have been married 38 years, we have a son Michael who is 34 and 2 beautiful grand children Mark 6 and Mindy 4. Michele works for our parish Priest part time and does volunteer work at the Church.
We fish, garden, cook, work on our 1966 VW Beetle Convertible, antique, and play music.
