Jan Homad Johnson

After graduation I completed art school and worked as an art director/designer in Seattle and Los Angeles until 1990. I met my husband, an Australian playwright/actor and director from Sydney while living in Los Angeles and moved to Melbourne with him getting married in Sydney in 1991. From 1992-1998 We lived in Houston, TX where I continued as an exhibiting artist (painting;abstract in oil) something I began in Seattle in 1980. In 1994 we formed our own theatre company and I have done set/costume design/lighting design as well as direct and premier new works. In 1998 we moved back to Australia and have continued with our theatre company in Sydney. For most of the year we work out of home 5 hours south of Sydney on a 100 acre property that adjoins National Wilderness Reserve. We have wildlife including kangaroos (red and gray), wallaby's (small kangaroos only a few feet in height), wombats, and exotic birdlife including cockatoos. Also huge goanas and other amazing lizard family members. We think of it as our art farm though we keep chickens for eggs, a turkey, and a beautiful veggie garden. We are off grid on solar and while we have a gas stove as well, our favourite way to cook is slow roasting in the old fashioned cast iron stove that most of the rural properties still chose to have today. The beach is an hour away and is beautiful and rarely another person on it as opposed to the city beaches of LA or Sydney. Last year I got accepted into the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (less than 100 students in the entire school) for Australia to a one year post-graduate course for Directing and an currently completely the last unit with an internship with Opera Australia working on Madame Butterfly in both Sydney and Melbourne. I used to get back to Seattle most years while still living in the US and still miss the city and Mt. Rainier. Well, mountains in general. They are pretty small here on the dryest continent on the planet. We have had some recent relief but still need more rain in a horrible drought and bush fires have been savage the last two "summers" or Christmas seasons. The difference with Gum tree forests burning is usually the trees remain and the forest reflourish unlike pine forests. We have the most deadly poisonous snakes and spiders which I have adjusted to though we lost our 3 year old Jack Russell/fox terrier to a red bellied black snake this February even though we got her to the vet in time for the anti-venom. It is beautiful here but unusual to get used to the caution and awareness one must have in the bush here which is quite opposite to the embrace of the rainforest of the Olympic Peninsula.
