After graduating from Lincoln I spent 4 years at Whitewater followed by a series of very short careers as a staff analyst to the state legislature at the State Capitol in Madison, a high school teacher in Green Bay, and a soldier in the army reserve. I then got a job working in the office of a paper company in Appleton where I spent 40 years and retired in 2011.
During those 40 years I lived in Appleton for 3 years and then my wife, Pat, our daughter, Sarah, and I moved to a 40 acre hobby farm in western Manitowoc County where we raised our daughter, a small flock of sheep and chickens while tending to an organic garden and a small orchard.
After commuting to Appleton for 37 years I retired in 2011. We spent 2 1/2 more years on the farm and then in 2014 while our health was still good decided to proactively move from our multi-level 1912 farm house to a single level 1952 ranch style house close to downtown Appleton. In addition to traveling we enjoy walking, biking and kayaking. I also volunteer at an organic farm which is located just beyond our back yard in a former 9-hole golf course.
In the 1990’s we hosted exchange students from Japan and Brazil. We have traveled to Japan several times to visit our Japanese student’s family. We also have visited friends in Thailand and China and have vacationed in Bora Bora, Indonesia, Spain, France, the UK, Mexico, the Galapagos, and Honduras. While we are still able we plan to continue to travel. Our next adventure will be to Palau in 2020.
