Carmen Robinett
hi all, i've really enjoyed skimming through the profiles and seeing what folks have been up to over the past two decades. so i'm belatedly completing my profile as well.
first, i've been back to alaska only a few times after a freshman year at UAA, so i will be in full tourist mode for the reunion. after completing my undergraduate degree at the U. of Illinois (urbana-champaign), i moved to berkeley, CA for graduate school in molecular biology, and then on to palo alto for postdoctoral research. after 14 yrs. in the san francisco-bay area, i'm fairly convinced that i'm no longer able to weather an alaskan winter (which is pretty clear when i go snowboarding in the sierras--burrrrr). but i'm pretty sure i can handle the summer with the ridiculous hours of daylight that i missed so much in my first few years living in the lower 48. what was familiar for the first 18 yrs. of my life will now be a novelty!
unfortunately, i've been completely out of touch with any classmates for most of this time (except for a few sightings of lisa limtiaco in berkeley), so i've been pleasantly surprised to see how many other west coasters there are...at least one of which is rumored to live only an hour away from me, and several others have passed through my neck of the woods a number of times over the past fifteen years. hope to bump into more of you in the future.
well, i look forward to chatting with folks this weekend, reconnecting with folks i had in classes, and hopefully re-meeting folks that i will recognize but maybe didn't get to know back in the day. it's weird that out of nearly 400 people, i probably only really knew 20 of you, but i can recall passing the other 300+ faces in the halls day after day between classes, even if i don't have all of the names in place. it's crazy that the yearbook pictures still look so familiar...but as wonderful as we all looked, i hope the hairstyles have changed! egads, my mother was right about too much mousse! :)
