Today's Featured Biography
Anita Morgan Woodley
ANITA (Morgan) WOODLEY is an award-winning journalist/producer/actress/baker, health/poverty issues educational entertainer, women’s health ambassador for Raindownus.org, writer, poet, playwright, state certified HIV counselor, teaching artist/2012 Emerging Artist for Durham Arts Council in Drama serving K-12 students, director, improv performer, operations manager for Grocers on Wheels in Southeast Raleigh’s Food Desert, and mixed-media/folk visual artist. She is the creator of the award-winning, non-traditional solo performances Mama Juggs: The Breast Health Show and The Men in Me: HIV/AIDS Urban Males Issues Show, touring throughout the US and Internationally. Anita provides a transformational non-traditional drama series and workshops that promote preventive health practices, early intervention for health disparities, and moving views into the world of poverty, HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, stroke, heart disease, bullying, respect and other topics that hiring clients request.
Woodley is the 2012 Durham Arts Council’s Emerging Artist in Drama and teaching artist for North Carolina CAPS. In 2011 Mama Juggs won the “Best of the Best!” award at the MALI Women’s Film & Performance Arts Conference in Austin, Texas. Mama Juggs: The Breast Health Show made it’s debut as a performance at the 2013 National Black Theatre Festival.
In May 2013, Anita was invited to close out Duke Medicine/Hospital Women’s Health Initiative’s: First Annual Regional Women’s Conference with a heart health infused performance of Mama Juggs. She is also the Women’s Health Ambassador and Educational Entertainer for Raindownus.org‘s “Black, Blue, Pink Cancer & Health Disparities State Tour” in Rural and Underserved Communities with the highest breast cancer and HIV/AIDS mortality rates in America.
Anita Woodley has been invited to perform for audiences ranging from College campuses, the University of Yaounde in Cameroon, Africa, Benedictine Nuns at Sacred Heart Monastery, faith based organizations and major Hospitals. In 2010, while visiting the Cameroon rainforest, she reunited with her maternal Tikar tribe through DNA testing and named “Princess Bekang” becoming part of the chiefdom of N’ditam Tikar Village. Anita became the first African-American descendant since enslavement to return to the bush village, learn their native language and be honored with a traditional naming ceremony.
As an award-winning national journalist/producer, Anita Woodley worked for CNN-Domestic News and NPR affiliate station WUNC-FM’s “The Story with Dick Gordon.” She has won numerous prestigious awards from the Harry Chapin Foundation for Hunger & Poverty, the National Association of Black Journalists, and an Emmy with (CNN) News for Exceptional Coverage on September 11th, 2001.
Mama Juggs has been warmly received by audiences across the U.S. Written as a promise to her mother – who died of breast cancer before 50 – it seeks to challenge cultural taboos and stereotypes surrounding breast health and body image. By raising social consciousness, it’s designed to contribute to the winnable campaign against breast cancer.
