I was married to Patrick Leon Frank (HHS Class 59) in July 1960. We lived in Trenton, NJ until till his death in 1967. We had no children and I returned to my maiden name at that time and returned to Florida.
My parents decided to move back to Illinois in 1967 and I stayed and sold their home for them and flew to Illinois in November 1967. I went to work as a draftsman in January 1968. In summer of 1971, my boss invited me to join him and his family for an afternoon of sailing the their 25 foot boat on Lake Michigan.
I fell in love with sailing and bought myself an 11 foot styrofoamed hull sailboat and learned to sail it. After taking boating safety classes from the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, I bought a 17 foot sailboat. I was very active with the Auxiliary and this lead me to join the US Coast Reserves in 1974.
After attending basic training, I went on the become a Boatswain Mate 3rd Class. Spend two weeks at CG Station Manistee, MI in 1976 and 1977. But now as a Boatswain Mate 2nd Class, I needed seaduty to advance to Boatswain Mate 1st Class (BM1).
The CG Cutter Reliance send to message that they would take reservists. I applied, was accepted, reported on 31 Dec 1977 only to be told that would not take a female reservists. I returned to Waukegan the next day and after sometime the 9th CG District found me a ship the CGC OJIBWA, breaking ice on Lake Erie and I went there in March of 1978. What an experience. I knew from the start that I wanted to go on active duty on a ship for at least two years. The Coast Guard said "NO", I was too old, I was now 37 years old, two years over the limit for active duty.
It would take a letter written by me, signed by the mother to get them to change their minds and allow me to go to sea.
On 1 March 1979 I reported to the USCGC MUNRO, a 378 foot CG Cutter in Seattle, WA. It was hard, I had no previous sea duty except on the OJIBWA. I had to learn everything from the gound up and quickly. We swapped ships in July of 1980 because of budget problems and I was now stationed on the CGC MELLON. We left Seattle on 3 Oct. 1980 for another Alaska patrol. The SS PRINSENDAM a luxury liner caught fire in the Gulf of Alaska that night. We raced to the scene, the people were rescued, no deaths or injuries, and we stayed with the ship until it sank in 8,000 feet of water.
In December 1980 I was transfered to the Aids to Navigation (ATON) team at Grand Haven, MI., and then to the Coast Guard Station at Muskegon, MI again because of budget constraints. In 1984 after the death of my father, I got myself transfered to CG Group Milwaukee to be nearer my mother. In 1986 rather than being transfered to a CG Cutter in Alaska, I returned to the reserves and finished my time as a reservist. Between the regulars and the reserves I had 28 years of service.
I returned to Illinois, went to work as a draftsman in 1990. I studied CAD (Computer Aided Design) Technology at the junior college here and graduated with honors in 1996 with my CAD degree. I am currenly working on two degrees in ART, and have become a fine art artist. I hope to graduate with honors in both degrees in 2010 as long as my health permits me to attend college.
I am living in Zion, Illinois, I have 3 cats and 3 leopard geckos, one of which has begun to lay eggs, 2 batches of two each, they should start to hatch in mid-July. I am a member of the Lake County Art League since 1996. I currently do art shows and have begun to do art work of reptiles. I attended the reptile show here in Gurnee and held a tarantula for the first time (I still don't believe I did that).
I hope to make it to the reunion in October and get to see my classmates again.
