Bette Watson Berning
Since I graduated in the year of our Lord, 1964, the last 50 years in my life have been one adventure after another. I married my husband, August Berning, in 1964. Since he was in the Military, we spent the next 20 years traveling from one base to another. We spent 12 years in Germany, and were able to travel all over Europe, with our 2 sons, B.J. and Matthew.
Upon returning stateside, we were stationed in Florida, Kentucky, Indiana, Texas, and Alaska. Alaska was our favorite place to live. We were able to go bear and moose hunting. We also, panned for Gold at Erickson's Gold Mine, outside of Anchorage and saw the Glaciers at Portage. We were stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska. The Summers in Alaska have 24 hours of sunlight and I had a great garden. We were able to experience Mt. Augustine, a volcano erupt.
The Volcanic Ash covered the whole base.
We also, attended the annual Iditarod Dogsled Races, held in March of every year.
And we experienced many earthquake tremors, while residing in our Quarters, on the base.
While in the Military we moved 17 times.
After retiring, from the Military, we moved
to our farm in Homer, Illinois. We raised
corn and soybeans. We farmed for 20 years.
I really enjoyed riding in the combine at
harvest time and taking the grain to the elevator.
Our youngest son, Matthew and his wife, Dorrie, live in Champaign, Il. And our oldest son, B.J. and his wife, Brenda, and their children, A.J. and Melissa live in Bloomington, Il.
We now reside in Bloomington, Il. We have been blessed with three grandchildren, A.J., Melissa, and Hannah. However, Hannah left this Earth at birth, to be with our Lord.
I help with the care of Melissa, and I support A.J. on his Music endeavors. A.J. is pursuing a career in Music Production, while in College. He has songs available for purchase on ITunes.
In pursuing my hobby of researching lineage, I have traced my ancestors back to 1611. I have discovered three Patriots, in my line ,who fought in the American Revolution, under Brigadier General Daniel Morgan. My Patriots, also fought in the French and Indian War, under General Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. I , also, have found one Civil War Veteran, who fought proudly under Captain Eli Lilly,
Due to my enriched lineage, in Patriotism, I have joined many organizations. I currently
belong to a few Lineage Societies, The National Society Daughters of the American
Revolution, and The Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, Illinois and Indiana Chapters. I also, belong to the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic.
I also, from time to time ,participate in various American Revolution and Civil War events.
Last summer, my husband and I repaired my
great, great, great, great, grandmother's
tombstone. It was vandalized and broke in half. Her stone is 170 years old. She is the grandmother of my Civil War Veteran, and the wife of one of my American Revolution Patriots. And just this week-end, my husband and I , repaired the tombstone of one of my Patriots . It was damaged , also.
As well as being actively involved within the
many organizations, I am part of, I spend my free time with my loved ones and researching my Ancestors.
August and I just celebrated our 50th Anniversary and are enjoying each day
God is allotting us to live.
