Today's Featured Biography
Doug Schubert
I attended Michigan Technological University in Houghton in 1957 and 1958. Then transferring to Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois and obtaining a BA in Business Administration, graduating in 1964. It was during my studies at Bradley that I began my career in the hotel industry. In 1959 I began working in a management training position at the Holiday Inn in Peoria. This began my lifelong passion with the business of hospitality.
In 1968 I married my first and only wife, Virginia (Ginny) who was a school teacher. Our family grew in 1972 and 1973 with the additions of Dianne and Dan. Both children are married (Jason and Amy, respectively) and have provided us with the joy of 2 grandchildren…so far, we are expecting another in January. Dianne and Jason live about 20 miles from us while Dan and Amy are in McHenry, Illinois.
Ginny and I settled in Buffalo Grove (’68 – ’70) and then Libertyville (’70 – ’75) while I continued to learn the hotel business as the V.P. of a hotel operating company. I opened 13 Holiday Inns before moving to Green Bay in 1976 to own and operate my own Holiday Inn, still going strong.
Ginny and I loved Green Bay. We were both very active in school, social and community events. It was a wonderful place to raise our family. We became avid Green Bay Packer fans and ended up following the team to 2 Superbowls. What fun!
We have always enjoyed traveling and shared that passion with our children as they grew into adulthood. We still enjoy traveling across the U.S. in our R.V. and have had opportunities to take cruises as well as visit Europe.
I retired from the day-to-day operations at the Holiday Inn in 2000 and Ginny and I moved to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Living in Eagle Harbor is beautiful and has a slower pace but it did not help me from flunking retirement, Ginny either. We are both as active in our community and the surrounding area as they allow us to be and we are currently building our final home on the shores of Lake Superior. We will reside there happily for the remainder of our years and enjoy life with our children and grandchildren.
By the way, did anyone figure out what the Master Plan meant? Well…don’t feel alone, I didn’t either!
