Today's Featured Biography
Glenn Blomquist
After graduation Nancy Wessels (Robinson), Bill Russell, and I went from being Fighting Saints to becoming Battling Bishops at Ohio Wesleyan University. The next stop was just down the road at Ohio State for an M.A. in economics. Minnesotan Kathy Beckman comes on the scene in a big way. We were married in 1968, the start of something good. By that time, I had figured out that economics, academe, and I were also a good match. So, after three years in the USAF in San Antonio, Texas, it was back to school this time at the University of Chicago. Mr. Zemek and Miss Stephenson, who taught us English and history, were U of C grads. They were extraordinary, and so was graduate study in economics at Chicago. That experience has served me well throughout my career. Some of you may remember my liking for motorcycles that I picked up from my father. My first academic job was at Illinois State University, which happened to be in the heart of the amateur flat track racing circuit. Kathy, son Sean (1975), son Greg (1978), and I spent summer weekends racing at tracks near Bloomington, Pekin, Peoria, Galesburg, Princeton, and Sycamore. I never had the time or money (or speed?) to go pro, but the Can-Am I rode was quick. Two of my favorite races were wins on the TT track at old Sante Fe Speedway when they raced amateurs and on the half mile during the county fair in Champaign. In 1980, I was offered the opportunity to join the faculty in the Department of Economics at the University of Kentucky. The four of us moved to Lexington where Kathy and I still live. On sabbaticals we have lived in Sweden and Latvia and enjoyed conferences in more cities and countries than I ever thought I would see. I am still at UK working with students and on projects. I’ll probably stick with it a couple more years as long as it continues to be fun and the mind and body hang in there. I still get kicks running and riding cycles. Kathy has retired from her career as a public health nurse, nursing professor at DePaul and UK, and as a nurse researcher. Sean is wildlife biologist with the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge near Toledo, Ohio. Greg is a physical anthropologist with the University of Missouri, and he and his wife raise our granddaughter Inara (2011). I look forward to reading and hearing your stories, but more than that just hanging out after 50 years. ‘Hope to see you in June.
