Today's Featured Biography
Robert Hunnewell
Following high school, I graduated from Babson College (BSBA), and married Betsy Myers in 1965 (SHS 1962). After completing my MBA in 1967 at Babson, “Uncle Sam” called, so I joined the Air National Guard and was later stationed in Biloxi, MS. Since college and the Air Force, I’ve been self-employed as a Manufacturer’s Representative selling tools and hardware in New England. We lived in Framingham, and 8 yrs later moved to Sudbury, MA in 1974 with our daughter, Chrisa, and son, Curt. Unbelievably, we are still in Sudbury!
Most of our free time during those family years was filled with figure skating, hockey, skiing, and boating. I continued in the rep business and Betsy became an active volunteer and part-time administrative assistant. We spent many hours in ice rinks in MetroWest, Boston, and Lake Placid, NY where I had thrilling rides on the bob sled and luge (no ski jumping!). The 1980 rematch between the USA/USSR Olympic hockey teams and Tina Turner concerts are great memories of our many trips to Lake Placid. Betsy was V. P. of The Skating Club of Boston during the exciting Kerrigan/Wylie years, and we are now 32 yr. members of the Club. As active members of the L/S hockey program, we both decided that hockey is much more exciting and enjoyable than the seriousness of competitive figure skating.
Once Chrisa & Curt were off to college (Ohio Wesleyan & Colgate), we began cruising the New England harbors & coastline aboard our boat, “Apres Ski.” Betsy devoted herself to horseback riding and her pursuit of excellence in dressage while working part-time at MCI-Framingham in the Health Services Unit. I like to joke that “Betsy is the athlete and I’m the athletic supporter!” To celebrate our 45th anniversary, I surprised her with a remarriage ceremony in a “tacky” Las Vegas wedding chapel. The Elvis imitator from the Stratosphere Hotel escorted Betsy down the aisle! Trips abroad, cruises, and horse treks in Ireland are all wonderful memories.
I have always been interested in music with a particular love of musical theatre, drum corps, and R & B. Although I no longer play my saxophone, I did have a rock band (the “Ascots”) thru my college years. In my recent quest to sell my 50 yr. old mint condition sax, we were privileged to meet Branford Marsalis while he was in Boston filming a WGBH special last winter. It was really exciting to listen to him play my horn like it had never been played before! He didn’t buy the sax but gave us some leads – we really enjoyed meeting such a talented musician and unpretentious man. He couldn’t understand why I don’t play this beautiful sax anymore … Betsy instantly replied, “At Bob’s age, any wind he has goes in the opposite direction!”
Presently, we are trimming down our business so we can work and travel, adjusting to a life without boats & horses, and enjoying being grandparents to Kevin (8), Lauren (6), and to Curt’s 2 mo. old son, Jack. We adore our grandchildren, but it sure is great when you don’t have the responsibility of child-raising … just the fun! We are fortunate that Chrisa & family live nearby in Natick, and Curt lives on Beacon Hill. We are thankful for our relative good health and great friends. Can’t believe it’s our 50th already! We’re looking forward to opening the “time capsule of life” with our SHS classmates.
