Today's Featured Biography
Ken Ward
I want to contact the following 3 people from our class: ANN HUTCHISON, MARY KATHLEEN HENDERSON, and BOB BONNER. If anyone knows how to contact them please give them my contact info.
Following is my profile:
I attended UVa and received a BA in history in 1968. 20 years after graduating from Suitland, I entered the Music Department of San Francisco State Univ and received a Master of Music degree in clarinet performance after studying for 5 years with Donald Carroll of the San Francisco Symphony. Well, to paraphrase an old saying, my MM degree and $1.95 will get me a cup of coffee at Peets. But music has enriched my life.
I have played in community theater and symphony orchestras in Sonoma and Mendocino Counties since I moved to Sonoma County in 1993. Before that I had played in the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Marching Band and Twirling Corps and was first clarinet for the concerts that we gave to sold out audiences in auditoriums throughout SF, including the newly opened Davies Symphony Hall in 1980.
A few years later, I joined City Swing Dance Band, taught myself to play sax, and became the lead tenor sax. City Swing had a cult-like following in the gay community in SF and played venues from the Folsom Street Fair, to the Venetian Room in the Fairmont Hotel, to Bimbo's night club.
Those last 2 experiences, plus the death of the founder (Jon Sims) of the marching and concert band, from AIDS in 1984 inspired me to enter music school in that same year.
I am now partially retired and taking jazz improv classes with a fabulous jazz tenor sax player. Perhaps, before the arthritis prevents me from playing my instruments, I might become a real jazz musician. For a long time I've had this fantasy that I was a jazz musician in a former life in the 20s, 30s and early 40s, when musicians wore tuxedos with very wide pointy lapels, my favorite era in American popular music.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
