Today's Featured Biography
Mark Volk
First of all I'd like to thank everybody who's given of his/her time and talent to make this reunion happen. It's so nice to see that some classmates have stayed in touch with each other over the years, compared to me, the independent cowboy type, who the last time I remember staying in touch was at our last reunion just before I walked out the door into the western sunset and became the "Lone Stranger."
I learned a long time ago that every day you're not six feet below ground is a good day, and so the path of life went in this direction. After graduating from Shanley, I crammed four years of college at NDSU into five. Next I worked in Minot for seveal years for the Dakota Boys Ranch. Then I settled in for the last twenty-three years at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck. The one thing I've discovered in the health care arena in the only thing that remains constant is change.
I never did meet that "significant other" and have kids which gave me more free time than most classmates, so I volunteered for a lot of duties. Here are a few of the better ones... It took a couple of tries to get elected, but I'm a member of the Loan/Credit Advisory Board at my credit union. I must be doing a good job because I was re-elected. For over twelve years my neighbor and I have taught a hunter education course for the ND Game and Fish Department. It's hard to believe that of all my classmates that I'd be the one who teaches people how to use firearms. (Kinda scary, isn't it?) And lastly about ten years ago I took the training/education and became a member of the National Ski Patrol. On any given winter day I'll put on my first-aid vest, grab a two-way radio and head out of the patrol shack at our local ski resort. Then I spend the day giving ski/snowboard lessons, rescuing people and spending time as a first-aid emergency caregiver as well as the resort sheriff. I love it! It's my true calling in life.
